Alpha Case Formation in Titanium Welds

Can anyone direct me to a good website or link with some info on this topic. I have the summary of the Robinson/Lippold paper but was just looking for more info.

Thanks for the reply CoryPad. I had that Titanium handbook already - what I'm really looking for is a definitive way I can see if I have an alpha case layer in an area behind a weld. When I inspected the welded area I noticed that the surface on the area behind it was slightly distorted, or rather, the texture of the surface was distorted. I suspect that this area was at a sufficiently high temperature (being right behind the weld area) and outside of the inert gas 'shielding' zone, thus exposed to air. Is there anywhere I could get photo's or microscope shots of alpha case ??

Two photomicrographs of alpha case appear in ASM HANDBOOK Volume 9 Metallography and Mictrostructures:

Figure 42 on page 466 and Figure 51 on page 467

I'll persuse some other sources and see if I can find some others. You can obtain Volume 9 from ASM International (

or look in the reference section of a good University library.
