Besides the color of the cover, what is the difference between these 1st editions?

I assume it was different printings with various amendments etc.

I need to purchase a (2nd hand) copy of the 1st Edition and wanted to know if one if better than the others as far as amendments etc.

Are all of the copyright dates in those editions the same? I was not aware that there were different color covers on the same edition. My understanding was that a particular edition had all the same color covers. There was an index to all the editions on the AISC website (up to the silver LRFD manual from the early 90's).

I couldn't find the list when I just looked but that does not mean it is there.

Jim.

Jim:

I was under the same impression as you - each particular edition was a different cover color. I don't have ANY copies of the 1st LRFD edition/printings, so I am not sure if/what the copyright dates are.

The AISC website changed not too long ago, and I cannot find the stuff I used to find...

My copy of the 1st Edition LRFD was light blue (like the bottom one). I didn't know there were different colors made for that one edition.

I would imagine they are all the same inside though - if they are indeed the 1st Edition LRFD..unless as jimstructures suggests that there might be different copyright dates or different printings.

All the LRFD 1st editions that I have seen are the light blue ones (like the bottom one you have).

I asked a friend who worked for AISC for a few years and she was just as confused as we are. Thoughts:
1) The light blue one is the correct one.
2) They used different colors for "anniversary" editions or possibly for metric editions. But, either should have been identified on the cover.
3) It is possible that there were test printings or such that were done and you got one of those copies that wasn't meant for the public. Though that is still a bit of a mystery.
4) You can check the date of printing inside to see if that identifies anything special about them.

Maybe the colors reflect different printings to correct for errata? Although, I suspect they would just issue errata rather than re-publishing the entire book.

Ok....so who is printing knockoffs of the AISC manual?[2thumbsup]

I hope this information is interesting to somebody. These are the colors of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

The basis of this information comes from a list I downloaded from the AISC website. From the start of the list up to, and including, the LRFD Manual 2nd Ed. is from the information I got from the AISC website. I have added from the LRFD 3rd Ed. to the 15th Ed. I know it is not complete but all errors are my responsibility.

Jim

Hope somebody finds this useful. I also hope Ingenuity doesn't consider this a hi-jack. I now have seen some of the advertisements for the 1st Ed. LRFD Manual with a Red cover instead of a Blue cover.

Jim:

Sincere thanks for posting this information. No hijack considered.

==> FYI - If any one needs to review/download digital/scanned copies of the 1st through 7th Editions (with various printings) they are free in PDF at AISC: Link

Ingenuity;
I went to my favorite used book seller site; and looked for the LRFD First Edition and found a couple of the Red cover editions (advertised), so I bought one.

I received a standard lighter blue cover version of the LRFD First Edition, 1986 Copyright, First Revised Printing 1/91. NOT WHAT THEY ADVERTISED.

jimstructures:

We are cut from the same cloth - Abebooks are my go-to used book seller too. My AISC LRFD 1st edition arrived today - light blue cover, like the bottom one in my OP.

I also checked with ASIC a few weeks back and they stated that the RED copy (top one in my OP) is probably a knock-off - as MotorCity suggested - it has NO AISC logo on the front cover - and the differences in the blue copies is probably just how the photo/light was taken.

So mystery solved: original AISC LRFD 1st edition is indeed light-blue cover.
