Advice on using plastic part as a plug for fiberglass mold

Hello

I need some advice on using a plastic part (ex: floor console from a truck) as a plug to make a fiberglass mold, so I can modify/improve it then make new consoles out of fiberglass.

Will the plastic used in the automotive industry hold up
as a plug for a mold if I do one layer at a time or will it melt/deform in the process.

I know how to make the fiberglass mold im just concerned
with the plug being plastic and will it melt/deform.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Xavier,

It really depends on what type of plastic the plug is made from. Does it have any letters inscribed on it suggesting what material it might be? I would say your plug is most probably Polypropylene and like most polyolefins, PP's are highly resistant to many solvents and chemicals. In most cases, inorganic chemicals produce little or no effect on polypropylene when exposed to even quite high temperatures.

Thanks for your input on this, I looked and there are no marks with numbers or letters of any kind, all I can say is it is made of what ever plastic Ford used back in the mid 80's in the truck and bronco line.

Im trying to avoid getting it ruined since it is in very good shape, I tried getting another one from a junk yard but there are non to be found around here (Miami, FL)

I have made molds before for boat parts, small hulls etc
but never tried making a mold out of a plastic part and like I said my fear is the heat the gelcoat/resin generates when in the curing stage.

I have a question along these lines. I want to use headlights and tail lights from new model GM vehicles for plugs. Do you forsee any problems with fogging/etching/deforming of the lenses? I am planning on using polyester resin and fiberglass to make the mold. Any advise would be appreciated.
