I am attempting to determine the maximum load in tension and compression without causing stress failure in a material. I am given the ultimate strengths as exceeding these would cause failure. I attempted several tensile pressure loads, even some concentrated loads both small and extremely large loads. I can not seem to determine where the stress failure point is from my results under Mises stresses. Any reasonable load I try just does not come close to my ultimate strength values but appears to be having stress failure (red zone). Is there a way I can set my ultimate strengths for the material and when the load exceeds I can then determine failure?

Any tips would be appreciated.

My assumption is that the results of the Misses stress in the direction of my load (S11) would provide me the stress value (in the red zone) and if this value is right below my ultimate strength would determine the maximum load.

Thank you,
