ABAQUS: Abaqus crashing when writing an input file

I am attempting to write an input file but every time I do Abaqus just acts like it is doing something (green bar on bottom right goes back and forth) until it eventually stops responding(the first time I let it run for 45 mins before it crashed). I checked the working directory and scratch folder and nothing is being written there in that time.

Here is what I'm trying to do:

I had an old input file for an analysis I wanted to run; however, some of the parts were missing and the loads have changed slightly. So, I imported the model using the old input file and added the extra parts and adjusted the loads, added contact, assigned material props, etc. Then I attempted to write out a new input deck and ran into the above issue.

Just to check, I also imported the old FE model(from the old input file) and then immediately wrote it to a new input file without making any changes. The same exact thing happened.

Has anyone ran into this issue before? Is what I'm trying to do even possible? Any suggestions would be really helpful since I am completely stuck. Thanks.

I have run into similar events. I would look for two conditions that you may be dealing with.

First make sure that your imported file does not call out the working directory. The computer will spend time trying to find it and finally fail. (Haven't seen this in ABAQUS but I have in other applications when trying to import old analysis.)

Two because of the way the older versions worked compared to the new versions I actually had a singularity in the part. The old version didn't detect it and the new program spent more time trying to find a solution before it crashed. I had to redo the entire analysis and then compare the results to come to this conclusion. I could be wrong but it made sense.)
