6-dof shell element 2

Typically shell elements are either uncoupled systems (membrane 2-dof + plate 3-dof per node), or coupled 5-dof (Ahmad element) described in Bathe's book. In both cases, the in-plane rotation in nodes is neglected or an artificial spring is added to avoid numerical problems during the solution of the equations.

Does anyone know where could I find the description of a truly 6-dof shell element (shape functions, etc)?

There have been approached proposed to accurately deal with the 6th ("drilling") dof freedom in a 5 dof-formulated shell. Following are two publications from Stanford University Applied Mechanics which are often cited. These will probably provide what you're looking for. These papers provide the basis for a justification and formulation of the drill.

PS--I don't think these would meet your definition of "truly 6-dof shell element", but I also don't know if there exists such a thing. Lacking that, this is the closest. Hope this helps.
