I have posted this question here from a specialized forum (Forum739) because that one seems pretty sparse. This may be a general question regarding export of beam center-line geometry from 3-D CAD to truss FEA programs.

I am looking for some help on developing a process for creating the input file for GT STRUDL from a SolidWorks 3-D model using curves.

I realize that GT STRUDL can read a DXF file, but this is not practical from a 3-D model as DXF can only be generated by the drawing (2-D) mode of SolidWorks.

Apparently there is also a STEP format but this file is called CIS/2 within GT STRUDL and has a different format than SW exports [AP203 and AP214]).

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Best regards,

Matthew Ian Loew

mloew,

I think you may have to write your own translator. I would recommend trying an IGES translation...something that you can use to generate the line elements at the neutral axis of the beams... but I don't 'speak' GT STRUDL.

mloew - I wouldn't hesitate to run this by the CASE center as they've always been very prompt with any questions I've had.
