I used to know a guy from Ukraine, he said he got rained on and poisoned standing in a parade in Pripyat (I think) the morning after, and was eventually treated for leukemia in west Germany. Never sure if he was telling tales or not, but a good story. He had dropped out of divinity college and worked as a trucker.

This is a very regrettable event. I spent time in Minsk Belarus in 1995 working on a medical products joint venture. The rate of cancer in children from the surrounding area, particularly south toward Gomel and Ukraine was just beginning to be acknowledged as alarmingly high. This will be a heavy yoke for many generations to come.

It is better to have enough ideas for some of them to be wrong, than to be always right by having no ideas at all.

At the time I was working for a small company in NYC; most of the staff were from Russia & eastern Europe. Any tragedy that befell the communists was celebrated. Of course at the time I doubt anyone thought about the human toll and the long term health effects.

I was in Barmberg, Germany at the time. The wind drift was west, meaning a lot of western Europe was impacted. The cobble streets in Bamberg had to be decon'd. Some major international incidents occurred when nations would donate milk by the trainload to third world nations when it could not be consumed at home.
