In Section 1010.8 of the IBC it clearly states that ramps with a rise greater than 6 inches shall have handrails on both sides. I need to install a ramp with a rise of 1.4', so I clearly need handrails on both sides. However, the situation is unique in that on both sides of the ramp there will be a low profile brick wall. One side will have a high iron fence on the wall and on the other side there will be a railing barrier on the wall. Installing a handrail on both sides of the ramp in addition to the brick wall/fence feature is not preferred.
Can we install 1 handrail (instead of 1 on both sides) in the center of the ramp?
I think the IBC previously required only 1 handrail, but the 2006 version now requires 1 on both sides.
Please help!
