The section I was looking for is:
CHAPTER 10: MEANS OF EGRESS
SECTION 1015 GUARDS
Where one or more sides of a walking surface are open to the floor level or grade below, a guard system must be provided to minimize the possibility of occupants accidentally falling to the surface below. A...
I am studying a case involving a steep riverbank in the backyard of a hotel. The landscape appears dangerous, but there are no guardrails. I could not find any requirements in the code regarding this issue. Could you help me find information about installing guardrails along the top of a steep...
I am sorry for delayed response.
I had to step out of the office and did not receive the notification.
Thanks so much for your help.
I’ll start looking for answers in ASCE 41.
Thanks again! I think I got it.
Movie theaters should have the same importance factor with banquet halls.
However, I now realize this structure must be evaluated as a new building, regardless of the previous uses and retrofits.
In the result, the DIV-88 URM building classification may change to...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I am hired as a structural engineer to handle the comment "show compliance with A1 for new building". Since the walls have reinforcement, does it make any difference? Do you think ASCE 41 still applies?
The previous use was a movie theater. The new use is retail and banquet hall. I think the risk category is the same for both uses. The note from the plan-check states:
YOUR OCC LOAD IS >100 NOT PUTTING YOU AT A RATING CLASSIFICATION OF HIGH RISK (TABLE 88-A), SHOW COMPLIANCE WITH A1 FOR NEW...
A previously DIV-88 retrofitted West Los Angeles building was undergoing a change of use that would require an occupant load greater than 100. The building was previously thought to have URM walls. However, the test by a specialized company revealed that the brick wall has reinforcement bars at...
This looks like an older detail. It is hard to evaluate the retaining wall design without information about soils. "French drain" deserves a separation from the rest of the backfill with a 12" diameter gravel fill wrapped around with textile fabric. The driveway shall not be placed over the...
Does the Building Code allow the use of adhesive sealant instead of mechanical fasteners to attache the wall base to floor structure?
I am trying to find an approved adhesive sealant to use it for attaching the base track to stone tile floor.
I cannot use any penetration in to stone tile.
The...
I would like to thank everyone for their input.
Your thoughts and opinion helped me understand the issue in much more details.
In conclusion, I feel more confortable with independent action then with composite action.
Gentlemen, I thank you for your contribution. Your input is highly appreciated.
Let me recap just to make sure that all of us are on the same page.
Two statements that have been advanced are:
1) the loss of partially composite action is indicative of failure
2) your 'way more elastic'...
Since all three layers have the same thickness, and silicon is way more elastic than aluminum, wouldn't it be accurate to assume that the top and bottom (aluminum) plates shall deflect independently even if there is no failure ?
Two 1/8" aluminum plates are glued together with a 1/8" thick silicone.
When computing deflection should I conceder it as a combined shape or laminated ?
My loads are low in my opinion,
15'x48'x20 psf = 14.4 K
so the seismic lateral force is less that 5K.
And the beam+post connection will give some resistance.
Thank you very much for your comment.
Thank you for the clarification.
My project is a proposed deck attached to an existing two story wood framed house.
Steel posts with grade beam could be the next choice, but the owner/builder wanted to use wood posts.
I assume that Figure 4B will apply. Is it required that the entire diaphragm...
When detailing Newport Tool & Fastener (ICC-ES WSR-1411) to anchor the roof tile straps to 3" roof concrete deck the building official raised concerns about Simpson Titen HD screws I had specified. This product is approved for dry condition interior use only. I've proposed Tapcon as an...
I am working with a local Home Owners Association of a 46 year old apartment complex on a damage assessment due to water penetrated through cracked stucco,
unprotected roof with shingles blown away by wind, flooding at stuffed rain gutters,... I traced water stains from mansard through the...
I only red the beginning paragraph and have had enough. Lets compare us with an athlete who is about to break a record. He/she has the "competence" to be the challenger, he/she also has the "confidence" that he/she can do it. But what is going to happen is a mystery yet. He/she may become the...
