    GRP Piping Seismic deign

Hi all We are design buried and above ground GRP piping. Design code ISO 14692. The code covers allowable stress for occasional loading conditions. The question is, what ductility/performance factor/response factor etc to we apply when working out the seismic design actions? would it be more...

    Vessels Manways

Company, local or national regulations should have requirements for access and confined space work. Our national standards cover wide a range of requirements including required training and rescue provisions. Regarding manways, DN750 is often the minimum plant owners now require.

    Pipe Crossing Building Expansion Joint

Depends on what building load cases the displacement across the building expansion joints. If thermal movement then you can include this in the thermal expansion range of the piping. EQ loads (or wind) opening/closing the gap will need SAM modelling for the piping.

When would piping need to be replaced due to an overpressure event where the Yield Stress was exceeded?

More detail required. How and were has the yielding occurred and under what load condition? How do you know? Codes actually allow yielding in some load cases, e.g thermal stress range or ground substance.

    Standpipes

Most projects I work on stop the pressure vessel at the flange where the stand pipe is connected. Someone still has to design stand pipe and coordinate the design of the vessel to allow for the weight and other loads from the standard pipe. Headache when the coordination goes wrong and...

How to Manage Pipe Support Lift-Off in Stress Analysis

I agree with ilovechickens While piping codes do allow for flexibility analyses the moments due to the ambient to normal operating temperature range, this can be big problem if the maximum/design temperature is higher. Say the operating temperature is 100C and the max the line could get...

Can Standard Flanges Resist Full Bending Strength of Pipe?

Use the same procedure you would use for structural flange design but with pressure flange dimensions. Should be lower costs to buy a pressure flange compared to making a custom structural flange. You could be conversate and use the flange calculations for sealing as the structural limit.

    Lap joint flange facing

I implemented RTJ lap flanges. Custom made from two WN flanges to allow rotation in the site assembly.

pump control valve for high acidity

98% sulfuric acid is OK to work with until you add some water. Then you could need some very exotic materials. We have applications that require Tantalum pipe spools at the point water is added. You do need to define the pH range of your acid.

    EN 1993-1-9 assessment of fatigue

Hi All Does anyone work with EN 1993-1-9 and how does assessment of fatigue differ from ASME VII please? Would to know if the design effort/time will change and if the FEM tools used for ASME VIII work with EN 1993.

Tube Rupture - High pressure gas into water

Two phase safety valve and disk sizing is covered by ISO4126-10, but this come back using two phase flow calculations for the pressure upstream and downstream of the disk/valve

Applicability of UG-44(b) for Aluminium Standard flanges allowed as per Code case -2905

The part of CC2901/UG44 that includes consideration of the material is PR, flange pressure rating. The lower the value of Pr the lower the allowable loads on the flange.

    Nozzle bore machining

To be clear R6155 meant check the design of the nozzle reinforcing (and allowable nozzle loads) The designer would have used the excess wall thickness of the pipe over tm when calculating the reinforcing required.

    Flange to pipe misalignment

The problem might with the pipe not the flange. Hard to make DN500 Sch 20 seamless pipe with constant thickness.

    Threaded Flange on 6" Pipe

We never use treaded pipe connections above DN50 (2") for our plant piping (steam and hot water) but our well drilling buddies use API threads for say DN300 (12") and 100bar, but they do have a $40m drilling rig to apply the required torque. Piping codes do limit the use of threaded...
