I have just seen a proposed heat exchanger with Titanium ( Grade 2) tubes and Alloy 400 tubesheets. The heat exchanger cools saturated brine. The galvanic action between these metals is much the same as between Stainless steel and Mild steel. Would it be reasonable to expect the titanium...
We are struggling to find the best material for some solid tyres which carry the outer end of a beam which rotates over a large water treatment tank Speed is very slow and the tyre runs on a smoothe concrete surface.
- Our steel wheels are 20" diameter with a flat rim 5" wide and the tyre is...
Can you tell us the Diameter and length of pipeline, and how long do you want it to last. Erosion by sand and pebbles should influence your design - why not consider a pe pipeline not just a lined steel pipe.

I have been asked to line a second hand GRP tank so it can store this chemical at 20 Deg C. I have never heard of CAPB previously and the Client has been told that a new tank would need to be Hasteloy or an equally exotic Stainless steel.
All I can discover about CAPB is that it is coconut oil...
Cloa and Edstainless Thanks for your input We did an examination and Yes, the top 6 inches of the tank (where the water level varies) is in very poor condition , so it looks like these 40 year old galvanised tanks need replacing.
Thanks
Corrosionman.
Our London appartment block has four large rectangular galvanised tanks on the roof inside the Tank Room. They were put there 40 years ago and the roof built over them. I believe that galvanising has a limited life and soon we will be faced with huge expense to renew them . Would it be...
Sounds like an ideal application for abrasion resistant ceramic tiles provided there is an adhesive that withstands the process conditions.Such tiles are used on mineral processing centrifuges as in potash industryand coal industry.

Our runway beams were a bit on the heavy side (762 x 267 with a 20 mm top flange) Our crane runway is 100 feet long.
We worked along the full length doing a 100 mm length of "heavy fillet weld" at alternate sides of the 63 bar so that efectivly we actually had 50 feet of weld at each...
We did exactly this same job when we erected our 15 T in our workshop - - we just put intermittent runs of weld on either side of the 63 x 63 bar and never had any problems. The only important thing that nobody warned us was that the 63 x 63 had a heavy millscale on it and the crane was...
Cathodic disbondment Somewhere in my basement files I have a test specification issued by British Gas Co for testing a coating or lining. A small hole is drilled through the lining into the steel surface - -measurements are taken of the rate at which corrosion slowly radiates out from the...
Hello, We have a heavy transformer enclosed in a mild steel case that has a cooling water jacket fed with fresh clean water. The unit is old and possibly has internal corrosion that might build up and block the narrow water passages.
Experimentally we acid flushed the jacket with Phosphoric acd...
Hard rubber is ok but so is a good quality natural with hardness 60 -65 Deg. A soft rubber forms its own gasket but hard needs a soft rubber gasket to ensure a leak proof joint. Beware of overtightening hard rubber joints - can crush the lining. Ideally the flanges should be flat faced to...
Gents, thanks for comments - you answered my query - -a flow Conditioner- - -I had tried flow retarder, flow brake, reducer, diminisher, controller, plus lots more but yes, a flow conditioner it is !! The pipe contains a heavy mineral slurry which is held back to a modest speed and which must not...
Hello All. We have a vertical discharge waste water pipe 24 inch dia and 200 feet drop (Ten lengths of 20 feet each.) To slow down the flow each length is packed with bundles of 4 inch dia plastic pipes, each bundle is built from 14 pipes 3 feet long. Each bundle is out of line with the next...
The rubber lining industry use a Spark Tester - - - a high wilvoltage "wand" is waved over the surface and the 2 inch long spark will instantly show any holes in the coating.

epierce, if it is of any value, I recently examined some 30 year old rubber mounting blocks from a heavy vibrating machine in a mineral processing works and they had had a pretty tough life - -they were being replaced because all metal parts were severely corroded - - we did Load /...
Hello, My domestic garage ( 35 years old) is built into a sloping ground and the rear wall now showing a few cracks due to external ground pressure. I'm thinking of strengthening the wall by drilling through the wall and then driving in a number of "soil nails" made from sizeable rebar, driven...
mdavied You could help us to help you by giving the temperature, pressure and air flow speed through a 4" pipe. There are several types of plastic with widely differing properties and maybe one of these might help.
