I am working with an assembly with quite a few parts. I notice that sometimes the parts do not get checked back in when I am done working with them.

Let me clarify a bit.
I incorporate reference datum planes into drawings to show where my object is in space, and how reference lengths are measured.
However I do not incorporate reference geometry in modeling to position a view in a drawing.
Or maybe I misunderstood the question all...
I usually don't do that because the location of the drawing on the sheet will vary with scale and model size.
Additionally, you have to position the "line frame" where you want it in modeling, and when you want a side view, you have to rotate your frame.
It really becomes much more of a hassel...

That CGM export function is useful in a lot of different work-arounds. Exporting a DXF file, for instance!
The only bad thing is that if you want to edit the text, or if it isn't the right size, you'll need to go through the entire process again.

Basically, you create a new part, and go into drafting. Use the line and curve tools to draw out your border (also refered to as a title block in other topics in this forum).

I personally tend to use Google, but also use Thomas Register to find specific components.
I've tried using GlobalSpec, but it just seems so convoluted. Thomas is much more straight forward.
