Heat Exchanger one stream out of service

A shell side relief valve is required to be operational to take care of the tube rupture condition. I hope this already exists.

    Strain energy on impact

I agree. But such a theoretical analysis will be time-consuming, and I would prefer ANSYS or similar software to simulate the transients. However, I believe that the above formula will give the order of magnitude of F.

Potential for hydraulic transients with liquid restriction orifice isenthalpic expansion

For such a large pressure drop, a small orifice size may be required. Hence, it will be better to have a series of orifices to reduce the pressure drop per orifice. The small orifice size will tend to be blocked by dirt, so the valve should be placed upstream of the orifice to enable cleaning...

Theoretical Question - Planar Truss Problem

The explanation is as follows: Suppose P is applied in +ve x direction. 1. There will be tensile force along asymmetrical member(end co-ordinate(-.707,-0.707)) as this will try to extend. 2. This tensile force will have a vertical component, which will be neutralized by tensile and compressive...

Theoretical Question - Planar Truss Problem

I also ran my software for asymmetrically arranged truss. The result is given below: One can see that both the above postulates do not hold good for this case.

    Strain energy on impact

Assuming 1. Rigid floor 2 Elastic collision 3. Instantaneous propagation of stress (infinite speed of sound)

Theoretical Question - Planar Truss Problem

Today, I checked with my developed FEA program for trusses with 4 symmetrical elements. The given postulates hold good in the sense that: 1. The magnitude of displacement does not vary with the direction of the applied force. 2. The displacements are along the direction of the applied force.

    edge preparation

AWS D 1.1 may not be applicable as the minimum yield stress for A 517 Gr F is 100 ksi and the D 1.1 is applicable only up to 100 ksi. Please check with the latest codes. What is QT material?

Evaluating sustained load case in FIRE Condition

The fire protection system is typically designed for the protection of occupants and buildings. Also, the equipment can be protected up to a certain extent. Referring to ISO 834 fire temperature curve, the temperature can reach about 1000 deg C after 1 hour. It may be futile to try a...

Repairs or Additions after Pressure Test

Mostly, non-pressure parts welded to pressure parts and seal welds for pressure-retaining handholes and inspection plugs are considered non-critical, but this may depend on the code you are following. Even if the re-hydro test may not be mandatory, there are certain restrictions in the repair...

Theoretical Question - Planar Truss Problem

The problem is complicated mostly because there is multiple statical indeterminacy. Also the members need to be pretensioned as compressive loads may lead to buckling. But may be we can neglect buckling. However, it will be more convenient to use FEA.

Exclusion From the Scope of ASME BPVC VIII-1 - water-based solution

Referring to ENDNOTE 1(at the end) : "The water may contain additives provided the flash point of the aqueous solution at atmospheric pressure is 185°F or higher." Also under U1-Scope: "(2) For the scope of this Division, pressure vessels are containers for the containment of pressure, either...

    Thick Walled Cylinder Question

This is for uniaxial stress P is applied at outside surface. For internal pressure there is triaxial stress.

    Thick Walled Cylinder Question

The exact elongation calculation is complicated. The inside and outside surfaces will try to elongate differently, so shear stresses may develop, which may try to make the elongation uniform. Using your formulae (with sign correction in sirgma_r & sigma_theta) in Matlab I get the following...

Does MDMT can be lower than the impact test temperature indicated in AMSE code?

But it was a good practice to follow the same code some time ago.

Does MDMT can be lower than the impact test temperature indicated in AMSE code?

@mechengineer Pl check the latest code.My code is not latest. However old code requirements are not wrong.

    Welding Joint Repair

B 31.1 or B31.3 does not forbid the repair of the root defect of welding. The repaired weld has to undergo NDT as per code, and a qualified welder to be used. However, it may be difficult to weld a 8" pipe from inside.

Does MDMT can be lower than the impact test temperature indicated in AMSE code?

As per cl. 6.1.1, the test temperature can be different from those in Table 3, so it can be lower too. But the impact energy values shall not be inferior to values in Table 3. As per clause 3.1.3, the impact test temperature needs to be specified along with the order.

Bolts in Shear on Circumferential Bolt Pattern

You have the option for a lower size and/or lower grade of bolts. However, a good factor of safety will take care of bending stresses.
