    Code Books

Just received my hard copy of Sec. VIII 2021 Ed. - Didn't know UCS-1 thru UCS-66 were removed?!? Missing in my copy. Copy was shrink wrapped so it didn't just go missing. The 2019 Edition I received two years ago had pages cut and glued back together. Mind blowing, considering the single book...

    Backing Strips below -20F

Anybody tell me how they handle backing strips for Cat. B seams for MDMT below -20F? Backing strips are considered a pressure part, but are they considered a base metal and therefore UCS-67(a)(3) is applicable? Using a Curve D material for backing strip, Shell and Head (Curve B) are exempt...

    UG-36(c)(3)(a)(-2)

Anybody tell me where Compress gets the thickness of threaded couplings? I have always used (OD of cplg - OD of Pipe)/2 to get wall thickness. For a 2" cplg this is 3" OD - 2.375" = .625"/2 = .3125" WT. Compress uses .3100". Using .3100" gives an ID of the coupling as 2.38"...over the 2.375"...

    Fig. UW-13.2 Detail S

I have been requested to use Detail S of Fig. UW-13.2, for an unstayed flat head. New to the 2017 Edition, I have not encountered this in the past....has anyone used this detail? Is NDE required by UG-93(d)(3) required? UG-93(d)(4) is silent on Detail S. Would C=.33 be an acceptable...

    App. Y Gasket Issues

I have a flange pair designed to Sec.VIII Div. 1 - APP. Y. Flanges were designed to use an EPDM Gasket classified as self-sealing. Now vessels are fabricated, customer is having issues with degradation of the EPDM in service with vessels previously fabricated (Service: alcohols/trace...

    HG - Appendix Y Calc

I am trying to establish HG for Appendix Y flange. (Not self sealing gasket) There is no calc in App. Y for HG. Do I revert to App. 2 where HG = W - H?, where W = ((Am +Ab)x SA)/2 for gasket seating? And where Am = Am2 (bolt area required for gasket seating)? Any thoughts?

    Compress or Another Calc Package?

I currently do PV calcs by hand. I am looking at purchasing a program to do this, but am wondering which is the best? This may be a biased place to ask, considering it is a compress forum.....but opinions are requested. I have reviewed calcs by both PV Elite and Compress, but have not used either.

    UCS-66.1 / UCS-67

If I use the ratio in UCS-66.1 to lower the MDMT (-35F) of a curve B material (SA-516-70 as rolled) do I need to take into account UCS-67 and use impacted tested consumables? Common sense tells me yes, but it isn't explicitly stated....unless I am missing it.

    Fig UCS-66.2

Folks, Is tr in Fig UCS-66.2, the UG-27/UG-28 calculation (ta in UG-45) or final tUG-45? If it is UG-27/UG-28, can it be below UG-16 Minimum value? Thanks.

    UCS-56(d)(2)

ASME Sec VIII Div. 1 Maximum rate of heating = 400 Deg.F An item was PWHT to 800 deg. F then sat at 800F for 1 hr then increased to 1100F in a matter of 15 minutes, does this satisfy UCS-56(d), which states a maximum heating rate of 400F/hr above 800F?

    U-1A Form ASME Sec VIII Div 1 - 2013

ASME Sec VIII Div. 1 - 2013 Form U-1A under part 8 Heads: has items 17, 27 and 31 to check vs the "Instructions for the preparation of Manufacturer's Data Reports". Item 17 is the "length of shell, excluding heads", Item 27 is Heat treatment performed by the manufacturer. Both are located...

SA-333 Grade 6 as Pressure Vessel Shell Material Sec VIII

ASME Sec VIII - UCS-27 states that shells of pressure vessels can be made from seamless pipe but must be manufactured by the open-hearth, basic oxygen, or electric-furnace process. Using SA-333 Grade 6 pipe, how can I prove that this requirement has been met, if on the MTR it only says, "Melted...

    NACE MR0175

Can two separate procedures (processes) with hardness testing to NACE MR0175 be combined to fill a single joint, or does harness testing have to be done on a coupon with both processes in the same coupon. Ex: GTAW root (procedure 1) SMAW fill (procedure 2) Can I combine these two...

    NACE MR0175

I have a vessel which must be built to NACE MR0175. Can someone tell me if Wear plates (for saddle supports on the outside of horizontal vessels) are required to be certified to NACE MR0175. The rest of the vessel is to NACE MR0175, but I am wondering if the wear plates and structural support...

    SA336 F22 CL 1

Hi, I have just received a forging of SA-336 F22 CL 1 material with hardness limitations of 24-28 Rc. The mtr does not have any tensile or yield tests. Is this normal or is my AI going to eat me up over this? Also, the tempering temperature was 1100F while the specification (SA-336) states...
