    Leaving first job?

I'm thinking about leaving my first job. The benefits are a little lacking and the commute is starting to take it's toll (more on my car than me) I was wondering if anyone has any advice for how to carry this out. Should I tell my employer that I'm looking? Can I use them as a reference? If...

Is there a way to insert assembly similar to 'insert part'?

Just out of curiosity, is there a way to 'insert assembly' like 'insert part' can be used for machined & cast versions of a part. Where it automatically updates? It could be handy if I have assemblies that should be the same except for one or two parts.

    Limit Custom Property Length

We use a template that inserts the part name from the model into the title block. This works fine most of the time, but sometimes we have parts that have really long names. If we don't catch it, Solidworks just prints over the next box of information. Is there a way to limit a text box or...

Flat view, sheet metal not all flattened

I'm having some trouble, I'm matching up my SolidWorks drawings to a previous design and playing with the offsets of my end flanges. I know this is frowned upon but I don't think it should be causing me trouble. My problem is I'll make changes and flip back and forth between the drawing and...

    Magnetic Material Food Zone

I work at a company that makes commercial griddles and deep fat fryers. Purchasing has requested that I investigate changing the material for the control panel from 304 SS to 430 SS. It seems that from a corrosion perspective that this should be feasible. However, I seem to recall someone...

New Part in Assembly, wrong unit system

I have set units to IPS, and dim style to ANSI, but when I make a new part in an assembly, the units switch to metric. Anybody else experience this? The dialog boxes are still in inches but if I draw a dimension, it's all mm. Very strange.

    Use for layout?

I need some help, my company allows customers to add multiple components into one "battery" Currently we have ACAD drawings of each individual unit that get copy/pasted and then sent out for approval. We've been using SolidWorks for a couple months with individual part design, but are a long...

Assmbly moved to released folder, now no references

Hi all, I have a bit of a conundrum. We've recently moved to SolidWorks but neglected to get the PDM. This hasn't been too much of a problem, we've just handled different revisions the same as with AutoCAD, by adding Rnn to the end of the file name. We're getting some assmblies completed in...

    BOM Letters

thread559-215223 I'm hoping there's been some changes to the BOM function since 2008. Anybody know if items can be assigned letters instead of numbers in more recent editions of SolidWorks?

    Wire/Rod Bending

Hi Everybody! I've got a tricky problem, I have to make a handle out of wire that gets bent and need the initial length. I've read that this can be accomplished by using a sheet metal part and adding fillets to get it almost round (0.0001 flats on 4 sides) Unfortunately this only allows bends...

    Bends with Forming Tool?

I'm translating some drawings from .DWG format to SolidWorks. So I have the flat and formed dimensions that we're getting out on the floor. Currently I'm workign on a drawing that has 2 bendlines meeting at a notch. SolidWorks won't let me model this correctly. I feel like SolidWorks is...

    Salary, Signing Bonus, negotiating tactics

What seems to be the going rate for entry level mechanical engineers near you? I took a temporary/trial hourly position for 90 days and I'm going to be getting a job offer next week to be full time. Any tips/strategies? Finally, I've read a couple general salary negotiating articles and they...

Bend notes "hiding" in broken view

I'm making a 60" long sheet metal part, to get the flat view to fit on the page, I put in a broken view. I arranged all the dimensions and bend notes (i.e. 90* Down). Then I save it, when I re-open most of the bend notes have gone and "hid" under the broken view. Anyone else experience this? Is...

    Maximum Open Drawings

Just wondering, does anyone know if there is a limit to how many drawings can be open in DS at one time? I have a feeling that hardware will be the main factor but thought there may also be a hard cap (at least for the free version) Thanks!!

    Shaded Printing

Just got new desktop, much faster but now when we print a shaded iso view it's very pixelated. Changing the dpi doesn't help. Same printer as before and with the old slow equipment we were getting pretty nice iso views Anybody experienced this or know what could be going wrong?

    Flat View, Sheet Metal, Flipped?

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. Whenever I make a drawing of a part, the flat view comes in as the back view. Is this a drafting standard that I am ignorant of? It's not a huge deal to change the view in the property manager, but any bend notations are lost when the angle is...

Title Block Changes Justification When Edited

Trying to make use of the Title Block functionality in SW 2011, I have everything nice and centered, but when I go to change the data, the justification switches to the left and messes everthing up. Side Note: Anybody else confused by how changing the justification moves the entire text box...

Formed Parts Position Changes in Drawing

I made a custom formed part and it seemed to work fine, I placed the part in a drawing, and when I dimensioned its location, it was shifted .004." I tried it with a "stock" forming tool and it worked just fine. Has anyone encountered this before? (SW2011, if that helps)
