    Steel Framed Elevator Shaft

Most of the buildings that I have designed had CMU elevator shafts. For the project that I am currently working on the architect wants to have the elevator shaft constructed of metal studs. My thought is to design a steel frame constructed from HSS sections that would be built in the plane of...

    ASCE 7-05 Section 15.6.1

I have this also posted in the ASCE Code section, but haven't gotten any responses. Section 15.6.1 starts by saying that is applies to all earth retaining structures assigned to Seismic Design Category D, E, or F. It then goes on to say that lateral earth pressures due to earthquake ground...

ASCE 7-05 Section 15.6.1 Earth Retaining Structures

This sections starts by saying that is applies to all earth retaining structures assigned to Seismic Design Category D, E, or F. It then goes on to say that lateral earth pressures due to earthquake ground motions shall be determined in accordance with Section 11.8.3 for Seismic Design...

Allowance for connections in cost estimate for Structural Steel

I'm reviewing a cost estimate, where the estimator assumed that the cost of the connections would be 30% of the structural steel cost. There are no moment connections, everything is connected with simple shear connections. This is a two-story structure; total height is about 44' above ground...

ASCE 7-05 Figure 6-23 Trussed Towers

I have a trussed tower that is square in cross section. The tower is a vertical tube that will support external stairs. The ratio of soild area to gross area is 0.2. For calculating wind loads I am using ASCE 7-05 Figure 6-23. My initial thought was that the wind load is applied to leading...

Foundation for Rolling Aircraft Hangar Doors

In the preliminary stages for the design of a PEMB aircraft hangar. Hangar door will be of the rolling type supported by rails at the base. Door height is approximately 40 feet. Wind speed is 90 mph. How is the bottom horizontal reaction from the door typically handled? Is it usually...

uplift pressure on stilling basin floor from hydraulic jump

Can someone direct me to a reference as to how this is calculated? I haven't found anything from the COE or Bureau of Reclamation. Thanks.

    Training Wall Design

I have a question about the stability analysis of training walls for dams. Does anyone know what the Corps of Engineers requires for safety factors for training wall design? In Retaining and Flood Walls (EM 1110-2-2502), the Corps requires a maximum safety factor of 1.5. In Structural Design...

    Fall Arrest Anchorage

OSHA 1926.502(d)(15) states "Anchorages used for attachment of personal fall arrest equipment shall be independent of any anchorage being used to support or suspend platforms and capable of supporting at least 5000 pounds per employee attached, or shall be designed....." What is meant by...

    mathcad 14 not auto calculating

We have mathcad 14, and sometimes it does not auto calculate, even though I have auto calculate activated. Even more baffling, some calculations will update, but some will not. Any suggestions?

    Macomber V-Lok System Lateral Stability.

We have a one-story building that uses the Macomber V-Lok system. We are trying to figure out how lateral stability is provided for the building since there are no shear walls or braced frames, just Macomber V-Lok. Does anyone know if Macomber V-Lok Framing was assumed to be capable of...

    elastomeric traffic bearing membrane

We are looking at repairs for an existing parking garage, and want to specify an elastomeric traffic bearing membrane. I've spoken with Sika, but they have nothing at the moment that is elastomeric. Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer of an elastomeric traffic bearing membrane for use in...

Does anyone know what the yield strength for steel shear studs used in composite construction in the 1960's was?

    late 1960's BOCA question

I am looking at a parking garage that was designed around 1968, in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania used to follow the BOCA code, and I am wondering if anyone might know what the BOCA floor live load for parking garages was from that time. From looking at the 6th edition of the Steel Construction...

    joint sealant in parking garage

Can anyone recommend a good joint sealant between precast slabs in a parking garage? Garage is in a northern climate and takes a beating from road salt tracked in from cars and large temperature swings. My understanding is that either silicone or polyurethane is the way to go. I'm looking for...

    soil pressure with 0.6D+W

Is it required to check soil pressure for a footing using the above load combination? I can see nothing in the IBC or ASCE 7 that would exmpt a check of soil bearing pressure, so my opinion is that by the Code, you have to. On the other hand, this seems overly conservative to me. In the "old...

    2005 AISC Spec

I know this has been discussed in a previous thread, but I want to continue the discussion. In New York State, we just adopted the 2003 IBC, which does not reference the 2005 AISC spec. Based on an email from the state, it seems that if we contact the local building official and get their...

    USGS 2002 seismic data

What version of ASCE-7 and IBC allow you to use the 2002 USGS seismic data? We still have to use the IBC 2000 which uses the 1996 data. The 2002 data is less conservative than the 1996 data in my area, but I don't see how I can justify using the 2002 data with the IBC 2000 or IBC 2003.
