How can I set up the workflow in EPDM to use a numeric revision scheme, then upon choice, start using an alpha numeric scheme?

We are using EPDM to generate part numbers for new files...... But, what if we have a file which was not created in using EPDM and now want to put it into the vault with the next available number, can this be done?
