    NYC Code Basic Wind Speed 98 mph vs ASCE 7-10 (121 X 0.6 = 73 mph)

Section 1609.3 Basic Wind Speed - Is this velocity for ASCE 7-05 or ASCE 7-10 The referenced standards in the back of the code list both! It appears to be ASCE 7-05 because Section 1609.1.1 - Determination of wind loads references ASCE 7 (no edition stated) references Chapter 6. Looking at...

Piles using water jetting - Sandy soil

In designing water jetted piles, is there a design procedure different from standard driven piles? When these piles are installed, since there are no blow counts, how do you determine that you have reached load capacity? Any books on this?

Existing Subgrade - no fill - Do you check for soil density as if it were fill.

After an area is excavated for footings, do you check for soil for density, or do you assume subgrade is suitable without testing. I have a project where Nuclear Gauage was used with failing tests, no fill was used.

RAM Advanse Shell Analysis for Steel Plate - No error message but stresses not correct

I am modelling a theoretical 2 ft square steel plate to see how it works, and not getting good results. I have created a shell, segmented it to 16 pieces, gave it 1/4" thickness, added pressure load, provided restraints at 4 corner, and added pressure load to the load condition equations. It...

Elevator Pit at Perimeter Wall of Building

Does an interior elevator pit (normal heated building - renovation project), right up against the foundation wall have to be built to frost line depth, or can it be higher. As it turns out the foundation wall is above frost line, quite a surprise!

TECTUM Roof Panels or similar product - lateral support for structural steel

I am looking at a Circa 1960's building with TECTUM or something similar roof panels, and wondering if this provides lateral support to perimeter roof beams. I don't think so, as the bulb tees supporting the panels look real small (from the little that is visible), but would like to hear from...

    AISC changes W21x 55 vs W21x57

AISC Wide Flange Shapes W21x55 is not in the 9th edition, but shows up in the 14th edition. How does that happen? W21 x 57 are in both editions!

BONDING EXISITNG CONCRETE TO NEW CONCRETE

I have a project where concrete was placed over a month ago, and now the next pour is scheduled at this joint. Should I be asking for a bonding product at the joint. When would you require this.

TIE BACKS FOR SHORING PARTY WALL - EACH JOIST TO BE TIED TO MASONRY

Construction Type: masonry walls with lumber floor joists I am showing tie-back anchors for the building to remain, for EACH floor joist on each floor at the party wall. These buildings were built in the early 1900's. The tie-back anchor is a 3/4" threaded rod with plate and nut on the...

Driveway with hot water heating tubes

I am designing a residential driveway, and calling for 6 inches thick concrete with 6 x 6 W2.9 x W2.9 epoxy coated WWR. My client now wants to add hot water heating tubes set in the middle of the slab. Any advise on whether this will be OK. Just for cars, SUV's etc, workman's vans, etc...

    TEK Screws for Outdoor Use

I have been asked to inspect an outdoor installation where the the designer called for #12 TEK Screws attached to structural steel HSS tubes. The screws support photo voltaic racks. My view is these screws, although they pass structural analysis, are simply not appropriate to be used in an...

MASONRY RETAINING WALL - HOW LONG BEFORE BACKFILLING

I am designing a 3 ft high bar reinforced 8" masonry wall, with depth in the ground also 3 ft, all on a reinforced concrete footing. How long should I allow for masonry curing before back filling? - I want to put this in notes. No cylinders or cubes will be taken to review reports.

ASTM A325 Bolts - Chrome Plated or similar finish

I just come from a job site where ASTM A325 have been used, not tension controlled type, and they are chrome plated or some kind of shiny finish, and marked H H H - ASTM A325. I am going to ask for the paperwork, but I though I'd ask here if this is OK.

SEEPAGE WELLS (DRYWELLS) NEAR FOUNDATION WALLS

What's the rationale for placing seepage wells 10 ft from from foundations. Is it that the foundation may settle, or that there could be water infiltration from the well, or both? Any way around this when there is an existing well closer than 10 ft? Foundation is for one sty building / no...

AWS D1.1 H values for electrodes, for diffusible hydrogen

I am reviewing AWS D1.1, looking thru AWS D.1. to see where H values are listed, and I can't find it. I asked this on the welding blog, but no one replied. This is a possible ICC S-2 welding exam question (from their sample questions), that quite a few PE's are taking to meet ICC and other...
