    2009 IBC wind analysis

Has anyone noticed how high the 2009 IBC load values are for high exposure c or d steeply sloped roofs...???

Concrete Radiant floor slab on grade reinforcing

For a 6" thick concrete slab on grade (which will have radiant coils) I am using wire mesh (2" from the top) then an layer of #4 bars at 16"o.c. each way. Recommending saw cuts after. Any recommendations to reduce further cracking........

    Diagonal Board sheathing

I recently got a plan check comment for using the incorrect R factor for diagonal sheathing on a wood framed house. Am i correct in assuming I need to design for an R factor of 2. That really seems inappropriate.

Plywood shearwall with openings and the 2010 Calif. Building Code.

The 2007 CBC (2006 IBC) had a table with which you would reduce the allowable shear ratio if the aspect ratio is greater than 2. Does it still exist somewhere and I couldn't find where the limitting aspect ratios are.

    Rebar or wire mesh

I have a driveway structure on concrete metal deck and steel beams. 6" thick concrete W3 formlok 18ga. metal deck. For reinforcing (crack/temperature/shrinkage) what is the better: Wire Mesh or rebar. concrete Contractors always seem to complain about the wire mesh. I've never understood why...

    New California Building Code

On January 1st calif. will be using the adopted 2009 IBC's. Does anyone have any experience on code changes. I know they adopted the IRC in this round for residential structures. Does this simplify any of the wind design.

    Structural Engineering Software

Does anyone have any recommendations for engineering software. I need to do simple moment frame and braced frame calculations using mostly wood and steel. The customer support for the company I've been using is driving me crazy. Reener.

    Warmboard plywd. diaphragms

Hey I recently began consulting on a project where the architect is demanding we use 1.125" thick Warmboard. Which is 1 1/8" plywd. with the PEX tubes recessed in. It is APA rated for 3/4" plywd. values. I know this product is real expensive and has many installation requirements. I'm more a...

    Engineered Lumber Exposed to weather

I have a project that uses parallam floor beams, TJI floor joists and OSB floor sheathing which has been exposed to a large amount of wet weather in the SF bay area. Usually I require structrual members to be primed with a sealer if it occurs during the winter wet months, because I have had...

Minimum clearance for stud cripple walls

I have a plan checker who was requiring 12" minimum clearance from crawlspace sub-grade to wood. The code requires 8" at exterior walls. I had a detail for an interior footing to have a 6" curb height and a 3x ptdf sill plate for a plywood sheathed 2x4 cripple wall. The plan checker said there...

    Special Moment Frames

Does AISC358 require all moment frame connections (from the beam to the column) to occur on the column flange. ie... the beam can not be continuous over an interior frame column of a lower frame column.
