Years ago I masqueraded as a mechanical engineer and designed my own home HVAC dual zone duct and register system. One my buddies who is a mech, loaned me his "ductillator", and with the help of these forums, I proceeded to oversize my ducts and registers to about 3x the system size as I wanted...
A little out of my league here but I would think harmonics would cause the power transformer to heat more and possibly fail prematurely.
The UPS is a simple, personal computer style unit (such as an APS) and is not true sine wave. We are talking maybe 30% distortion.
The power pack is about...
I picked up a Carrier satellite heat pump (38BK024300 2-ton) at a local salvage yard. I wanted to know if anybody has heard of a heat-pump coil that would work woth this unit. Normally it goes with these whigh wall mount satellite fan coils. I would like to utilize this heat pump with a...
I have manual dampers for each room at the supply plenums. I just have no idea how to balance them. Can anyone recommend an easy step by step process? The entire house is one zone.
Thanks!
440 Megawatts of power dropped off line today during commission testing of a new power plant. The problem, using historical data, is largely suspected to be communication failure between an AS-i 2.1 gateway and a Westinghouse Ovation RLC module. At the start of the failure sequence both the...
I have just installed R4 flexible duct in my rather well ventillated and somewhat isulated attic (radiant roof sheathing). I have a substantial amount of this R4 duct in the attic. Some runs are nearly 20 ft. Would it be worth my while to buy a larger R8 flexible duct product and slip it over...
Has anyone gotten the permitting authority to buy-off on using 14 wire for the siwtched legs of fixed lighting loads when the system uses No.12 wire and 20A breakers everywhere else? NEC rates 14 at 25A but limits the overcurrent device to 15A. I was thinking that since 14 is rated for 25A and...
I need to increase my airflow but don't want ot purchase a new compressor. My fan unit is capable of 1450CFM but my current 30KBTU coil is rated 1150 max. Can I simply replace the 030 coil with an 042?
Thanks!
I haven't delved into the issue much, but now we have an issue here as to whether the rebar cage inside of a concrete column sunk 30 ft into the ground is a good ground. If the conrete is wet, I can see how it would be, but if for some reason the dirt dries out, my suspicions are that the dry...
I have a Carrier 38HD A030C nominal 30,000 Btuh compressor/cond unit and a Carrier CE3AXA0300000ABAA 30,000 Btuh coil. My heater and blower unit is rated at 1450CFM but my coil is only rated to 1000 CFM nominal, 1250CFM max. This will kill my extra 200CFM which I really need for my 3300 sq-ft...
I have this Wheel-O-Duct sizing and I need to know what the "in-H20" I should use. I am using standard 8,9,10,12,16, and 20" flexible duct sizes. Should I use .08? I know to shoot for 700 fpm velocity.
Thanks!
I am considering making my own distilled water misting system ahead of my condenser/compress unit to get more cooling power out of it. I am planning on triggering it by using a two-stage thermostat inside the living space. The condenser/compressor unit is a high quality, 12 SEER, scroll-type...
Aside from the regular "glass-fiber" stuff (which I think is R4/inch), does anyone recommend and superior types of insulation for sheet-metal plenums, boxes, boots, etc?
Thanks!
I am trying to size a traingular shaped return air duct and haven't found a table equating it's dimensions to those of a rectangular or round duct for air flow equivalence and inches of water. Does anyone have any guidelines?
Thanks!
P.S. I am doing this to shove the return air into the side...

In a torque spec for a typical bolt, washer and nut arrangement, is the proper torque value affected whether it is applied to the bolt head as opposed to the nut?
Thanks!
Have a max 1200 CFM vent hood in a new house. Considering the entire central air blower unit is 1450 cfm, how can I best do the make up air, if at all?
