Dear Friends,
I have a situation here at the joint of (pipe) DN850 API X65 PLS2 pipe to (closure) A350 LF 2 Class 1. The design pressure if 10.2 Mpa 65C, Pipe thickness used is 23mm. which is adequate for the pressure for the strength of X65 pipe. At the joint, the closure hub would be...
Hi All,
we are about to hydro test some pipe spool, U shaped and L shaped. My concerning is once pipe is blanked off at ends and pressurized, the U shape or/and L shape will tend to straighten itself. Could anyone please share some idea on this? should be this be a concern? if so, any idea on...
Hi All
I have a cylinder ( OD, thickness and width known), as shown, is supported at half way, lateral force F1 and F2, say F1=F2.
Would someone advise on some reference on how to find out the max bending moment at the support plane? so I can find out the max bending stress, hence determine...
Hi All,
Simplified situation,
A piece of straight rubber block/strip, say 150mm (Lr) long by 30mm (Wr) wide. 30mm (Tr) thick, on top of it a steel plate os same size, 150mm (Ls) long, by 30mm (Ws)wide, its thickness (Ts) is to be determined.
Force f1 and f2, action on the edge of steel...
Hi All,
Since appendix 1-10 has now been removed from the 2107 edition of the Div code, we now go to use Div 2 part 4.5 for larger nozzles (ratio greater then 0.7 to 1). Which material allowable stress shall we use now , Div 1? Div 2? Vessel design code is Div 1.
Thank you
Hi All,
I was reading somewhere mentioned most turbine blade is made by casting? Made me thinking, why not forged or machined from block?
I won't think cost is the reason for such high end product. My limited understanding is that investment casting generally is not as good as forged product...
Hi All,
When designing the pin connection, we have tensile and shear stress and also bearing stress.
Assume all individual stress are within its limit, say Actual/allowable = about 60% each.
DO YOU also do a unity check?
eg
tensile actual/ tensile allowable + shear actual/shear...
Hi,
Could someone give some advise or links on advantage of explosion welded plate over roll bonded clad plates?
All I know is expolsion welded plate, only few people in the world can do it, roll bond is more available from your local shop.
Thanks
Hi All,
Seeking some expert advise here.
Here we got a low pressure application, around 150 kpa, water service. client to want to use as less torque as possible on the blind flange nut to create the seal. ideally finger tighten. we are planing to use some soft rubber ring gaskets, as it...
Dear All,
When you do a design for blind flange use UG-34 (c) (2), formula (2) it refer to Appendix 2 for W & hG
In appendix 2, it calculate 3 stresses for SR SH ST, for a blind flange, being lose type flange with no hub, then SR SH are ZERO. How about ST, do you need to check for ST for...
Dear All,
When designing lifting lug, (made from a square plate with a hole cut in the middle). Do you apply stress concentration factor at the inside edge of the pin hole? Or do you only compare average normal stress across the remaining cross sectional area, F/A to 0.6 *Fy (AISC ASD part 5...
Hi All,
I have a question here, a pipe with inside medium temperature known and outside surrounded by air, pipe dimension also know, eg thickness, diameter, material thermal conductivity. How to find out the metal surface temperature on the outside of the pipe? I would assume the metal...
Hi All,
Do you include pipe tolerance when calculation for internal pressure? If use SA106B pipe, there is 12.5% tolerance on the wall thickness, I think the schedule wall thickness need to be reduced by 12.5% to truly reflect the worse case shell thickness.
If use formula given in UG-27...
ASME B31.3 Table 302.3.5 listed a series of weld joint strength reduction factor at elevated temperature. So at elevated temperature, the parent material strength is already reduced by some factor, should the allowable strength be further reduced by this weld joint reduction factor? For example...
Dear Members,
For a vessel made of cast, thickest part of the wall over 50mm, dose PWHT requirements as for welded vessel also applicable?
Are there any special consideration for PWHT a casting?
Regards
Spoonful.
Dear All,
Found this strange skin-like pattern on the ID of a SS pipe ID, please see attached. Seeking for a bit of expert explanation, of why and how?
Cheers

Hi All,
As per ASME VIII Div 1, fig uw-16.1 type f-4 nozzle connection, it has shown as welded from both side, inside and outside, due to geometry limitation, it is not possible to weld from the inside of the shell, is it permissible to weld only from outside. just like weld shown for type...
Hi All,
For a simple been both end fixed, under uniform distributed load, as per Roark's table 8.1 case 2d. Max moment is at edge of Wl^2/12, and hence max stress at edge. If we apply a load which will result a stress at edge exceed the allowable stress, or even exceed material yield stress...
