    why?

    I made a mistake with my last post. It was a 371 Detroit diesel not a Cummins. I put 200 ohms of resistance on one of the field leads and that gets me down to a manageable voltage but it still doesnt tell me why I had the problem in the first place. Anyone with helpful hints please respond.

    I have a 60hz 208v generator powered by a 371 cummins diesel. When I got it the DC power wire from the solenoid to the control box was badly burned.
