    large opening in wood diapphragm

Can dome one give me a hint on how to handle a large opening in a wood diaphragm. See attached sketch,http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=a12ccfd1-ab7d-4717-91c0-54851b2f46f6&file=opening_in_flor_diaphragm.pdf

    cotage roof

Could someone tell mw if there is any change needed to the normal procedure to design the roof diaphragm to a cottage style roof. I'm thinking not but not certain. The building would ne 62 x 110. Thanks kindly

    reidential basement floor

My client who is also the owner-contractor has requested that no reinforcing be specified in the 4” sab in a residential 4-plex we are designing. (a first for me). Any comments about that?

Foundation for hopper bottom grain bin

We are designing a foundation for a hopper bottom grain bin. It is supported on 20 individual legs on cast in place concrete piles (no slab). How would you treat the grain in terms of load factors in ultimate limit state design? Bin diam. 27’ Ht 38’ capacity 17,500 bus (1086 kips.). The piles...

design cast in place piles under lateral load

Attached are a couple of pages from I piece I found in my files. Other pages are apparently misplaced. I wonder if anybody recognizes the source of the document and could tell me where to obtain a copy. Also I wonder if anybody could suggest another source of possibly r a more friendly piece for...

I am trying to upload a pdf of a drawing off the desktop as an attachment to a post. I have done this a few times before. What am I doing wrong now? -confused !

    Tall narrow frame building

The client wants to build a frame building for a car wash. Length 60,’ width 16, height 15’. Needs a door in each end 12’ wide and 14’ high, that leaves 2‘ on each side available for shear wall!! Wind load 15 psf. Pretty large shear. This appears to be a challenge. Any comments?

    Vibration from a train track

My client wishes to build a 1500 ft bungalow house on land about 400 feet from a railway track. The speed past the area would be approximately “highway speed” 3 or 4 times per day. The hose will have a full 8ft preserved wood foundation on a concrete strip footing based abut 5 ft. below grade...

    wind post lateral support

Attached is a sketch (plan view) of a base of a mainframe in a proposed PMB. The is a wind post in close proximity to the frame col. The lateral load at the base is about 7 kips. I would prefer to have a pile under the wind post but obviously there in room for it. I cooked up the attached detail...

pre eng buildding no floor no frade beams

I have a client who wants to put up a pre-eng building on cast in place concrete piles without grade beams and without a concrete floor. On an existing asphalt paved area. The frames span 60 ft and spaced at 25 f oc t. I don’t like it. Am I right?

    surface foundation

My client built a barn in the country on a 24” x 10” concrete surface footing. He does not want to put a floor in it (initially at least). The barn is 16’ x 32’ x 15 ft high (main floor plus a loft. Overturning or lateral wind doesn’t look like it would be a problem. I don’t see any anything...

    Steel Tower

Attached is a sketch of a free standing marque our client wishes to to erect at the entrance to his business premises. I have been working on a solution assuming portal frame behavior. The extreme aspect ratio has me a bit anxious and wondering if the usual assumptions which are made for a...

    helical screw piles

I submitted this post a couple of years ago, but I thought useful to post it again.. We did receive several thoughtful replies. But at that time many engineers had a few questions about them themselves, having used them very little and were a little skeptical. The post read as follows: “ Who...

    lateral deflection portal frame

Can someone give me a formula to calculate (or estimate) the lateral deflection in a fixed base portal frame. I col and I beam are the same. Thanks for your help. J

    Pre-Eng building over existing building

Our client wishes to design a new PEB spanning over a series of smaller buildings which make up his total operation (automotive dealership). The new building will be about 90’ x 110’ and will cover the existing plus part of the existing vacant lot. The idea is to build the building complete with...

    Boundary beams load

I believe it can be assumed that shear walls of equal construction do share the shear from a rigid diaphragm in proportion to their lengths. Does the addition of a partial interior shear wall have any effect on the tension load on the boundary chord? See attached sketch example.

    built up wood tension members

How would you calculate the net effective section area of a 2 or 3 ply built-up timber strut for tension resistance e.g. Boundary beams in roof diaphragms? Thanks a bunch

    interior shear wall

We are designing a wood frame storage building 200 ft long 64 ft long 16 ft ceiling. There is a 22 ft door in each end. The available shear wall length is thus 42 ft at each end. My numbers give me a required shear wall resistance of over 700 plf at each end. One possibility to reduce the shear...

    Fee for Structural engineering buildings

I would like opinions on an appropriate fee to propose for a project I’ve been asked to do. I’ve read posts here where 1% of the total job cost often works. I agree with that in cases where an architect is the prime and gets say 6% of the total cost and the engineer may typically claim 20% of...

    UPSET GRADE BEAM

We have a client who wants a lumber storage shed designed. Single story wood frame, concrete grade beam, concrete piles, slab on grade. He wants us to look at doing a concrete grade beam to project 4 ft above the slab. Why that? To create 20 ft side walls with 16 ft of standard sawn lumber...
