Which of the following industries would you persue in the welding/materials field and why?
1. Power Generation (fossil)
2. Nuclear
3. Oil & Gas
4. Aerospace
5. Consulting
6. Other
Also, which do you think would add more value to an Welding engineer looking to move to one of the above...
I've been an engineer in the welding field for about 13 years now. Most of it has been in a production support roll. I am working at a decent job now, but the longer I'm in the production support role, the more it seems to be getting mundane. I'm sure my employer doesn't see it this way, but...
Does anybody have any idea what 304M4 is? Google searches seem to mostly come up with Asian companies offering wire. We apparently have a fastner supplier where the MTR is saying the rod is 304M4. I can't find any ASTM related designations so far.
Would a steel shaft and bushing (with grease) that are both electoless nickel plated have a tendency to gall? I'd prefer to plate both parts to increase the hardness and hopefully reduce wear on both of them, but if galling is a problem, I can do one part only.
Is it just me, or is there a little bit of a disconnect in the new NACE/ISO document? It specifies a HRC 22 maximum, and then specifies testing to be done with HV10 or HV5. Then of course, it does not provide a conversion table. I normally use A370 to convert HV10 for non-austenitic steels...
We have had fairly good luck with the particular brand of E71T-1 FCAW wire we use when testing CVNs at -50F after 1125F PWHT. Recently one of our customers specified an 1175F minimum PWHT temperature. After 1175F, the CVNs did rather poorly at -50F. (We also tested E7018-1 in parallel, and of...
Starting a new weld test on X65 pipe, but don't have API 5L specification. What is the elongation requirement? Is the elongation of X65 20% or greater so that 3/8" thick bends are required?
Thanks
Does the D1.6 structural stainles steel welding code address the welding of precipitation hardening stainless? If not, does anyone know of other codes that might?
Thanks
Has anybody tested this type of material with CVNs at or near 0F (-18C). We are needing 50 ft-lb and our standard FCAW and SMAW electrodes don't usually make it even at room temperature. 40-45 ft-lb would be typical. I was looking at GMAW since the CVNs are usually better than FCAW or SMAW...
We are manufacturing fittings which have to be hydrotested. On previous projects, our customer has specified to use A234 WPB weld on pipe caps with a 40 ksi min yield. The fitting we were manufacturing had either a 36 or 50 ksi yeild, but on the most recent project, the yield strength of the...
Is there a good way to estimate (or calculate)expected hardness given a metals chemical composition based on tempering temperature? For instance, if a weld has a hardness of 225 HV10 after a 1125F PWHT, can the hardness after a 1150F PWHT be calculated? Are there ways other than the...
I don't know for sure where the equations came from, but the ones we have apparently used here for a while that seem to work good on a variety of steel alloys are: (temperature in F)
Ac1 = 1333+40Si-25Mn-26Ni+42Cr
Ac3 = 1570-323C-25Nn+80Si-32Ni-3Cr
Ms = 1042-853C-60Mn-30Cr-30Ni-38Mo
Mf = Ms-483...
Does anyone know if type 415 stainless plate is available anywhere. (this is the wrought version of CA6NM castings) I don't know of anyone that can supply this material so far.
In general, on low alloy steels, (API 2Y gr. 50 for instance), what is the effect of cold work on toughness. If for example you cold bend a plate and strain the outer fiber 5-10%, how would CVN tests compare to unstrained plate?
Has anyone experience strain-age embrittlement on thick plates (3" (75mm)or greater) in the HAZ? No cold working was done on our plates, so it would all have to come from the welding. We are trying to determine if this is a possible cause of low HAZ tougness values for some testing we are...

Has anyone done crevice corrosion testing on duplex sst S32550 (25Cr, 5Ni, 3.5 Mo, .2 N, 2 Cu) or similar with welds in the as welded condition? We have not gotten good results in the HAZ in ASTM G48 method A tests unless solution annealed, but have never done crevice corrosion or chloride...
For materials requiring impact testing, there seem to be two interpretations, which one is correct? I hadn't heard of one of these interpretations until yesterday but I won't say which one as to not skew the question.
1. Since the paragraph says "When proceedure tests are made on material...
