Are metals and metal alloys practically incompressible?

I am thinking this is an important concept when it comes to cold forming. If I bend a piece of sheet stock on a small radius it seems to flow out along the bend axis. If I do a hardness test on a piece of metal, the ball penetrator forms a crator with some metal flowing up and forming a...

OK, Debunkers, is this for real? ? ?

. see: http://www.switch2hydrogen.com/. I see big problems getting hydrogen to work in otto cycle engines with "minor" kits. From the photo's of these kits I have seen, it (the tanks look like SCUBA tanks) looks like they have enough compressed gaseous hydrogen in tanks to run them a few miles...

Turn gasoline into fuel fit for diesel use

. With the widening gap between 90 octane gasoline price and diesel fuel price here in the U.S., is there a successful and cost effective additive, treatment, etc. to rescue diesel drivers from being raped at the gas pump?

    Cheap Diamond penetrator hardness tester...

Looking for a cheap vickers type hardness tester, 80-220 D.P.N. range, part size is 3/8" dia prepped section and 3/8" thin wall tube, 70-30 cartridge brass. It can be VERY cheap, as long as it is repeatable, ie. simple stage, penetrator, dead weight, separate microscope and scale. Any suggestions?

Retention forces for tubular interference fits

. Someone, a while back, posted a pointer to an online source for a comprehensive calculation, spread sheet, etc. written by an eng. college professor that determined the stresses and prevailing push-out loads for a metallic rod inserted in a metallic tube or a pin in a hole, etc. It included...

NDE for verifying hard coat on aluminum (not decorative anodizing)

. Is there a handy verificaton for Hard Coat on aluminum. (I think the original process was patented "Martin Coat") without getting too exotic? What about a micropoint hardness test? Seems to be some confusion in the industry, with some decorative anodizing being a poor substitute for Hard Coat.

Can anyone share the design details of this joint(s) for the slab that fell? Was this a Hilti Anchor system in tension? This just off AP Newswire: Report: Big Dig Ceiling Designers Wanted 4 Bolts Per Hanger but Were Persuaded to Use 2 BOSTON (AP) - Big Dig project managers persuaded the...

I need a pointer to a good free STEP (sp?) file viewer for looking at PRO/E models and picking off vector distances. Thanks,

17-4 heats -Let me count the ways

Now I see HH1150 or H1150+1150 from BearCraft. Apparently this is two times through H1150 process heat treat. BearCraft publishes a separate set of mechanicals that go with it. Also now I am seeing published mechanical properties for Condition A solution annealed state, where before Carpenter...

Need air driven low rpm 12.5 ft.lb.limit nut driver, reversible

I have an application that needs a nut driver. The unit will be used in a contaminated hot cell. The unit should drive approx. 2 RPS. Torque should be limitable to 12.5 ft.lbs. Direction of rotation should be reversible. Output should be smooth. We tried an air driven ratchet wrench, which...

ANSI 14.5 Latest Rev guidance on mixing frac. and dec.

Where does it say (subsection, chapter, paragraph, page, etc.) in ANSI 14.5 (94 ed. et.al.) that it is not permissible to mix fraction dimensions and tolerances and decimal dimensions and tolerances when using the "inch" system? In this case the mechanical design drawing border tolerance block...
