    Dangers of jetting "compaction"

I need some technical publication articles, papers, etc. citing problems with jetting new fill in attached garages. I have exhausted many attempts to find such articles in ASCE and other sources. Purpose is to show my neighbor builder it is very dangerous. He has built many a house and...

    Work hardening example at home

Came across a metallurgy example at my house that is interesting. We have a flower garden in town where there are many deer. They love to eat peoples flowers for some reason. So I surround the flower area with a fence of steel bailing wire on fiber glass rods at about 30" height. A timed...

Problem with use of GPS or similar giving Police a wrong fix.

I';m a civil engineer but also a Ham operator, but know nothing about using GPS (our surveyors use it I think). In the past three months the Police here stop in because they are getting a false alarm at our address (three times now). Our single cell phone is not turned on, but uses a local...

Builoding code for foundation drain question in USA

I have struggled with the code committee for foundation drain requirements in Wisconsin. Code committee consists of plumbers. no engineers. Result: Not much cooperation. I am looking for language from municipal or state agencies which properly addresses requirements to prevent plugging of...

Preventing Failures by Contractors and others looking at new fields to work in

In the Nov 25 - Dec 5 issue of Engineering News Record, editorial by Thomas Schleifer, PHD he notes that many construction project failures by contractors, as well as others, is due to them taking on jobs which are not types they have experience in. He is offering a free program for...

Boston Water main break kills workers.

Not an engineering failure but of interest to engineers. Something fishy here when trench box is needed after the fatality. http://www.enr.com/articles/40685-boston-water-main-break-floods-trench-and-kills-two-workers

Help another poster on shaft design

There is another post on the subject of "lateral earth pressure" on a deep shaft. Perhaps mining engineers can contribute to that subject. Look for "Lateral Earth Pressures on a Deep Rigid Shaft ". It is post thread255-415476

Opinions requested for use or misuse of "corrected" SPT values.

I've been reviewing some reports in the last few years with SPT values on the logs given as "corrected". With many older tables out there based on past experience, I question anyone making any changes to the SPT values coming out from this crude test in the field. I view them as wishful...

    Buildings collapse in China

Noted on Fox News several buildings collapse due to sliding stored earth piles nearby. http://video.foxnews.com/v/4670156107001/building-collapse-caught-on-camera-after-massive-landslide/?intcmp=hpvid1#sp=show-clips

    Indiana I-65 bridge settlement

Check out this ENR article. http://enr.construction.com/infrastructure/transportation/2015/0824-piledriving-and-poor-soils-prompt-indiana-i65-shutdown.asp The explanation of the problems cause sounds fishy. What the heck is "compressed gravel" or "watertight soils". Also what is an "artesian...

    Your attention to a post

I figure you all might want to examine the photo on Geotech Other site. I managed to freeze the TV shot. Seems like the driller's aim was good between the two rails.

Watch where your boring is placed

Most of us call the One Call to be sure that you don't mess up underground utilities. However, I suspect they don't have good information on the location of NYC Underground Subways. This picture showed up while I was watching Fox news this morning. Sure looks like a hollow stem auger that...

Studded tires on asphalt pavements and health effects

A friend of mine in Sweden tells me that studded tires in cities are reported to bring up to the atmosphere asphalt dust of some type that is causing illnesses and deaths. Can someone explain the situation in engineering terms so that engineers elsewhere might benefit from the information...

Short height correction for unconfined compression test.

I've been asked for a reference or formula for correcting unconfined compression tests on samples shorter than twice the diameter. I used to have that in my files, but now no luck. I understand there is such a correction for short concrete cylinders, but I can't even find that now. Help.

    Minneapolis Mud Slide

Here is a link to a local news paper article. On TV I heard "engineers say no problem since building is founded on rock". Ya?? Looks like it might be a problem shifting things to the river. http://www.startribune.com/local/minneapolis/263922941.html

Another bridge foundation problem I-495 Wilmington, DE

News of the Washington State Slope Failure Needed

News papers and TV are not giving much that we,as engineers, could use or which may better explain things. Information on past slides and the current one would be of interest to all if it deals with technical causes, etc. Perhaps engineers in the area can comment here.

Green Bay Settled Bridge is Fixed

Engineering-News-Record has a short article in the March 10th issue indicating a summary of the fix. Here is a photo copy of that article. I could not find a link on their WEB site for this article, as usually is possible.

Downstream wier intended to protect gravity sewer upstream - Experiences?

A 10" plastic gravity sewer was installed about 40 years ago and it then was 4 feet below stream bed at the crossing. Recent flooding conditions have exposed it so there is perhaps 3 feet of water depth beneath it and it is barely under the water surface now. One fix planned is construct a...
