Deflection limits for a composite transfer beam

What limits would people be looking to design a transfer beam that supports a concrete column and post tensioned flat slab at the level above and a reinforced concrete slab at its wown level. I have a consultant that has designed a transfer beam that is no stiffer than your average floor beam...

Delamination of plaster on masonry wall due to hammer drill

I got asked recently to look at a historic house(circa 1850) where the internal plaster has delaminated in a corner allegedly as a result of a service pipe drilled through an adjacent wall. The wall is a an external wall intersection. Imagine a capital T in plane with the two left hand side...

Using bentonite slurry as a permanent filling material

I have a project where it is proposed to insert a PE pipe into an existing cast iron pipe which runs under a rail line. We have done this type of thing in the past but usually the PE pipe is a reasonably tight fit. In this one the CI pipe is about 24" and the new PE is only about 12" due to the...

The Structural Engineering Profession (Structurals/Civils only please)

In response to some questions made in the Architectural/Structural Fee Residential post I felt that this topic needed its own thread. This topic has been covered before in the more social forums but usually they get overrun with the mechanical/electrical types which, in my experience seem to...

Why are there more cable strikes in summer?

A Utilities company that I do work for has discovered that their mainslayers damage more cables during summer than in winter. They seem to have done a good statistical analysis that allows for any skew from hours worked, lay rate e.t.c. but I was wondering if anyone else has come across such a...

Crane Failure due to ground bearing

Came across this one and thought it would be interesting to get geotechnical perspectives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz71eVreMDc

    Guided Auger Bore

Does anyone know where I can find good information on the construction method for guided auger bores? Also any information on settlement compared to other methods of small diameter tunnelling. Any information would be great as I am struggling to find info on this specific method. Thanks in...

    Trench boxes on sloping embankment

Has anyone used a trench box on a sloping embankment? The final state is easy to achieve but doing a stage analysis for its stability during construction is very difficult. Any advice would be appreciated.

    UK budget prices for steel

anyone know the general estimating price per tonne for uk steel with simple connections. I have 150UC struts about 6m long which are galvanised and have pinned connections each end.

Using Acrow props as trench struts

I have a temporary works job where the design engineer has specified acrow props to be used as trench struts. I am used to these being used in a vertical position such as for supporting formwork or an opening but I am dubious about their capacity in a horizontal position. Has anyone had any...

    Structural Abuse

Just thought this was an interesting topic. When have you seen the builder effectively violate the structural integrity of your design because of a clash with services e.t.c. Here is a good (meaning bad) example: http://www.dbp.org.uk/cs/DBP00042.pdf

    Structural Engineering in the UK

I am moving to the UK in a week and was looking for a bit of a heads up on the situation there. What are typical packages for engineers like (i.e. not salary amount but do people get a company car/car allowance/pension/health insurance/Bonuses? Will my Australian Chartered Engineer status be...

    Properties of cables

Does anyone know where I can find E and A properties for typical cables? The information that I have only covers strength properties but this doesnt help in calculating end reaction for a catenary curve. I am looking at around 1/2" diameter overall for the cable and will specify whatever is...

A little bit of intercountry steel trivia

I noticed in the American steel design allowable stress design code that I have that they refer to the old Australian steel code AS1250 as a reference. Interesting that our old codes still have some influence over here.

    AISC 1989 code supplement 1,2001

The new NY city code still refers to the 1989 code for ASD, but also refers to this supplement 1. I cant find this anywhere. Does anyone know what it covers?

    Concentric bracing connection design

I have a connection designer that wants to use a concentric knife plate detail for the gussets at the end of tube braces. The detail involves a knife plate and a gusset in line with each other and a cover plate each side with bolts into each. I am not sure how to check this connection for...

A490 Bolts and 90% Zinc Rich Primer.

I have a tower of exposed steelwork which is to be galvanised. My 1.5" diameter A490 bolts obviously cannot be galvanised, so I am proposing coating these in 90% zinc rich primer after installation. Are there any issues with this such as embrittlement?

    Mineapolis bridge - yes again

I noticed the following news thread on the aol site: http://news.aol.com/story/_a/2003-photos-reveal-warping-on-bridge/20080323153909990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001 I just love how they quote lawyers as if they are expert witnesses.
