Ok, here is a question. How did the FAA settle on the 1.5 factor of safety? Did it come from the proposed handbook for airplane design Oct 1927? Or does it even have it's origins in aircraft design? Anyone have any idea?

Since the X-prise success I am surprised with the lack of apparent progress in this area. I blame the Federal GOvernment mostly as they have not made it a priority. Rules need to be written, standards etc. As a company that deals with aircraft approvals, spacecraft seams to be the next...
I have a client that has requested that I develope an airbag system for his helicopter. The purpose is to reduce the potential for cyclic headstrike injuries during a crash.
Are there any other helicopter owner opperators out there that think this would be a useful addition to helicopters...
There has been a number of comments re. the FAA budget cuts. I wanted to make a couple of comments about my experience with the FAA and may be start some useful conversations about getting the most from the FAA.
I am under the Seattle ACO. They are suffering like everyone else. I have found...

This is an aircraft application but it doesn't really matter.
What I have is a joint where 2 of the nine bolts are failing in bearing. The remaining bolts are relatively lightly...
