Seismic Design of Columns using NBC 2015

I am working on design of a column using NBC 2015. Base Shear calculations performed by Compress calculates the Base Shear using NBC 2015 and reduces it be multiply 2/3 to it. The argument is that NBC 2015 is based on Limit State Design whereas ASME is based on Allowable Stress Design. Has...

Removal of Lifting Lugs and Trunnions

In a middle-eastern refinery project, client specification calls for removal of Lifting Lugs and Trunnions after erection. As would be expected of contractors, they are seeking Waiver against this requirement. The reason put forth is that there is no value in removing them. What is industry...

    Internal Coating of Storage Tank

I am working on a new refinery project in the middle-east where for internal coating application contractor is seeking to cut open the shell approximately 3.5 m x 3 m to allow easy entry of coating application equipment such as a man-lift. The tank has already been hydro-tested. Contractor...

    Air Testing of Roof

Air Testing of roof is required as per the following clause in API 650: F.4.4 When the entire tank is completed, it shall be filled with water to the top angle or the design liquid level, and the design internal air pressure shall be applied to the enclosed space above the water level and held...

Air Testing of Storage Tanks to Annex F.4.4

I have a question about Air Testing of storage tanks. API 650 Annex F.4.4 calls for testing of vents during or after the Air Test. See extract below: F.4.4 When the entire tank is completed, it shall be filled with water to the top angle or the design liquid level, and the design internal...

Welding Procedure for API 650 tank

I have a question about API 650 requirements for welding procedures that should be used for tank welding. Section 9 requires that the welding procedures should be qualified as per ASME Section IX except for those items such as ladders and platforms, handrails, stairways and miscellaneous...

Attaching a boot with a pair of flanges to shell.

I have a Gas Boot (90" dia) that sits on top of a horizontal vessel. To achieve this, I want to add a 90" nozzle with a flange and then a vertical shell. Top of the shell will be closed with a semiellipsoidal head. Can somebody help me how to do that in Compress?

Reporting Foundation Load - Horizontal Vessels

Is there a provision in Compress wherefrom one can easily pick up foundation loads and moments that can be simply reproduced on the vessel GA drawing?

Designing a Nozzle on which a Vertical Vessel is mounted

I have a Horizontal Vessel which has a 24" NPS nozzle, on top of this nozzle I have a 7.2 m tall vertical vesseal of Dia 610 mm. To my understanding I should have the loads calculated for the vertical vessel (Wind and Seismic) and then apply these to the Horizontal Vessel. Will someone from...

Seismic Design of Pressure Vessels as per NBC of Canada

I have a difficulty in selecting the 'Force Modification Factors' for pressure Vessels. Since the table provided in the code does not does not have a category in table 4.1.9.1.B that can match with the vessels. Can someone advise me on this?

Nozzle Load : Transfer Piping loads for Saddle Calculations

I have in a horizontal vessels a few Big size Nozzles (60" NPS). While calculating the loads on the saddles do I have to consider the loads that I locally applied to the nozzles? To me it appears not neccessary. I would appreciate any inputs on the subject. Thanks.

    Quick Opening Closure manufacturers

Quick Opening Closures are often used in Filters and Pipelines - Pig Launchers and Receivers. I am looking for one which is suited for a slightly different application - 'A Sample Box'. the pressure is of the order of 103 kPa(g). Temperature is 65 deg C. Does anyone know about the suppliers...

Design of Saddle for Horizontal Vessel

Compress uses a Friction Coefficient of 0.45 for steel-to-concrete contact. This results in larger resultant forces and the anchor bolt size. Can the Gurus advise any better way? using a Teflon pad or SS plate seems one of those possibilities.
