    Continuous Flitch Plate Beam

Hi I have always seen and designed single span flitch plate beams. I was wondering if they be as multi-span beams with intermittent supports. I just designed a two span beam and wanted to double check before making the submission. Any thoughts or advise will be appreciated.

    Allowable Fence Post Deflection

I am designing an 8 foot high fence for a roof top and was wondering if anyone knows what the maximum recommended deflection for the top of the steel post should be. Of course, I have checked the stresses and designed the posts but can't find anywhere recommending L/120 or L/80, etc. as the limit.

    Steel Section Properties

Hi, I am trying to find section properties for an I-Beam that looks like a S section with tapered flanges with d=27" and b=10.125" The flange thickness goes from 0.68 to 0.96 inches. My guess is that the building is about 70 years old. A quick search of historical data wasn't much help.the S...

    Need Old WWM Properties

I am working on a project that the record plans show "316-28 WWM" for a 6" thick slab reinforcement. I assume it is probably a stainless steel wire mesh. Does anybody know how I could get the design info for it? Thanks

    Grade Beam Question

I have seen grade beams directly on piles with the bottom of the beam below frost line (say 42" below grade) and, Grade beams that are supported on 2'x2'x18" pile caps. It that case, the bottom of the grade beam is only 18" or so below grade. I like to see what the general consensus is out...

    Old Codes

Anyway I can get an old building code, say from 60 years ago? I need to find out what the requirements were for house crawl spaces. They probably didn't have any! I'm reviewing a report which the engineer who wrote it is using current code to deny the owner's insurance claim for damage. I don't...

    H-Pile Design Question

I'm designing shoring for excavation of a 15' deep cellar which will later have 14" concrete foundation walls and concrete slabs.this will a 5 story concrete bldg. This will also be a cantilever H-Pile wall with no tie backs. I have two questions: 1. Since the H-Piles will be encased in the...

Non-Load Bearing Walls/Studs Becoming Load Bearing!?

I inspected and old (100+ yrs) house that at some time in the past had its unfinished attic converted to a living space. A few walls were apparently added which clearly were not structural and the color of the wood is even different. My guess, 30 or so years old. All walls and a few studs were...

    Parking Pavement

I am working on an existing parking lot that is being used by a 40 unit apartment building. There is a dumpster at the end of the lot which the sanitation trucks drive to pickup trash and then back out of the parking. Severe wheel rut, settlement (8") and some unraveling of the 1.5" thick...

    Underpinning Adjacent Foundation

I am designing a three story masonry residential building that is 100’ long and the back of it will be right against a 45’ long house (only 5” gap). The bottom of the proposed basement foundation will be about 6’ below the house foundation (wall footing). Soil blow counts are 40+/ft. I am...

    MathCad Prime 3 Engineering Programs

Does anybody know of a good source where I could find civil/structural/geotech programs for either Mathcad 15 or Prime 3? Even a good guide or worked out examples would help.

    Correcting the Blow Counts

Do we always need to correct the blow counts (N) for overburden pressure before determining the bearing capacity and settlement? I have seen clac's done both ways. I am designing shallow foundations (spread and wall footings)slightly above groundwater table and in some locations 1' below water...

    Helical or Strip Footing

In looking at the attached boring log for the east coast area where the water table is about 2.5’ below surface, I was considering helical piles and grade beams but the client is saying that the local engineers use strip and spread footings for the residential buildings. The loading would be...

Four Tier segmental Retaining Wall w/o Geo-Grid

I originally posted this in the geotech forum but there very little traffic there! I was looking for some suggestions to repair this segmental retaining wall that was not constructed correctly in the first place. After a section of the wall collapsed, I was called to inspect it and found out...

Four Tier segmental Retaining Wall w/o Geo-Grid

I was looking for some suggestions to repair this segmental retaining wall that was not constructed correctly in the first place. After a section of the wall collapsed, I was called to inspect it and found out that there was no geo-grid installed and now, after over ten years, there are signs of...

    Fireproofing 2x12 wood joists

I have a situation where three A/C units were placed on top of a flat roof that has 2x12 wood joists. There is a hung ceiling and any fire could potentially cause the units to fall thru roof. The roof covering is rolled asphalt and the units that weigh about 500 lbs are placed on a couple of...

    Beam Formula ?

Has anybody seen the attached beam formula? I am reviewing and old clac that uses this formula to determine max span 's" of a steel beam for making sure that the beam is rigid. This beam is being attached to an existing beam that at the point of attachment has stiffness K. K is the minimum...
