    Hot or Cold

I am about 1.5 miles from the main drag when I leave my house on these cold winter mornings. Will my truck F150 heat up faster if I drive 30 mph (the speed limit) or 60 mph. (Illegal) But at 60 I will get there twice as fast. Just wondering which scenario will get my heater working faster??

    Thermal Generator

Old Structural here who has forgotten just about all the Thermodynamics I ever knew. We know that the "sunny" side of a spacecraft can experience temps in the +250F range while the "dark" side is at about -250F. Why couldn't some type of fluid be boiled on the "hot" side, run through a...

    Digital Sound Chips

Had a question a few months ago on this subject and you guys pointed me in the right direction (dumb Structural here)and Thank You. While cheap and appear easy to use for toys, dolls, greeting cards, etc they seem to be limited to about 270 seconds of record time. I am looking for something in...

    Voice Module?

I am looking for a small device that I can use in a toy in which I can store voice phrases. I would be more than happy to Google it - but what is it called? Help and thanks.

Do Engineers have a (Weird) Sense of Humor

Along the lines of a previous post - Do engineers have a sense a humor (I know some do) or if so - is it quite different than the average Joe??

    Titanium Dioxide - Bad??

From an old Structural who actually did pretty good in university Chemistry but that was almost 40 years ago!!! We have a bunch of industrial equipment (1.9'' galvanized tube) that has TO "caked" on it. The user wants us to take it back. They contaminated it. From what I have read, this is...

The Heaviest Object in the Universe

I think I have found the heaviest object in the universe and it is called the PHONE. While I love these forums and have learned way too much and hopefully have offered some good advice - I still see so many questions like "What will this bolt hold?" or "How hot will this XYZ boiler get?" I've...

    Light Bulb continuity

Dumb old structural here with an $8.00 Radio Shack tester. I would have thought that a light bulb (known to work) would show continuity - but it doesn't. IS the resistance too high?? Or do I just not know what I am doing?? Has happened before.

Multiple Hairline Cracks in Newer Foundation

Residential concrete foundation 8'' x 8' tall pour. Has more than enough steel in it - both horizontally and vertically. Poured about a year ago. In the last 2-3 months it has developed many hairline cracks all over the place. Seem to be getting more numerous - but not wider. No signs of...

    Steel to Aluminum Connection

This may not be the best forum but one thing I know - you guys have seen it all and respond quickly. I have a primed steel to aluminum connection on interior of building. So it will always be dry. I have no trouble with the connection design - but now the owner is worried about corrosion or...

    Electric Car Conversion

With the price of gasoline approaching $4.00 / gallon I am seriously considering converting and old car (VW maybe) into a an electric vehicle to drive back & forth to work, store, pharmacy, etc - maximum of about 50 miles per day. I am a decent mechanic and know enough about electricity not to...

Blind Nut into Steel Square Tube

Some one makes a simple system for installing a "blind" nut into steel structural tubing without much work. It may even be proprietary. I have looked and Googled but not finding what I have seen in magazines - somewhere. Does this ring a bell for anyone?? Thanks

    Spin Wheels Before Landing

Everytime you see an airplane land, a large puff of smoke comes off the wheels as they skid before spinning up to speed. I imagine this wear is the major factor in short tire life. Some planes need new tires after just a few dozen landings. Why not use an electric/hydraulic motor to spin the...

Why Not Fuel Injected GA Aircraft

Structural here that does a little flying once in a while and I have a question. Every general aviation (GA) plane I have flown uses a carburetor. The pilot always has to worry about ice and the need for carburetor heat. If you read the accident reports - many are probably from carburetor...

    Electric Oil Pump??

Just a crazy old Structural that likes to break things - and fix them. If we believe all the oil advertising and engine mfgs, they say the worst engine wear happens during the first few seconds of startup due to lack of oil pressure. Why not install an auxiliary electric oil pump that cycles...

    Mexican PE License

I have googled this till I am blue in the face - maybe missing something. NCEES does not seem to have anything either. Bottom Line - Does anyone know the requirments or how to get a Mexican (NOT New Mexico - already have that) Professional Engineering License?? From what I can find - they...

    Heavy or Light Braking

Will you get more brake and tire wear if you quickly apply the brakes or "drag" them coming to a stop say from a set speed of 50 mph?? Obviously - the slower method allows aero and engine braking to help out longer but all things considered - does it make any difference? The theoretical work...

    CFL Light Bulbs

I have about had it with the new CFL light bulbs. Sure, I like saving energy and can live with the slow start, funny light colors, added cost, etc. BUT what I can't accept is the VERY short life span. I don't think I have had any last a year and some have given up the ghost in a couple of...

    Temperature at a Distance

Structural here with a Thermo question - Thermo class was 35 years ago. Simply - if I have a heat source - what will the temperature be at a given distance away. Example: Pipeline running at 1,000F and there is an object (metal or wood) say 2' away. What will the temperature of that object...

    Salt or Calcium Chloride

Structural here needs some help We have many catwalks, scaffolding, walk ways made from painted steel and/or galvanized steel. The question has come up - Is it better to de-ice these with salt (don't think so) or calcium chloride? Or is there a better chemical we should be using?? Hair...
