    heat transfer improvments

I'm a materials guy who has made thousands of tons of stainless steel for pipe and tube. My question is, would there be value in a micro surface finish on heat exchanger surfaces (one that does alter dimensions or change traditional surface appearance; not a coating) which causes low surface...

    increased condensation/evaporation rates

Why do Mo and N help the pitting resistance of stainless steel?

The passive film is a semi-conductor about 20 Angstrom thick. In very well passivated or electropolished stainless, it is a P-type semi-conductor. This means the current, in particular the corrosion current, must be carried by the very slow substitutional diffusion of cations, e.g. Fe. In air...

    surface texture

Does anyone know of a surface texture which can be obtained for stainless steel to increase heat transfer in condensing heat exchangers? Michael McGuire

    stainless course

Materials Science & Technology 2012 Conference & Exhibition October 07-11, 2012 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Come to Pittsburgh. ASM is giving a short course on Stainless Steel at the MS&T convention. I'm teaching it but some of you experts might like to audit and pitch in, even if you don't...

    4340 nitrogen levels

4340 has no nitrogen spec. Does anyone know a typical value? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    descaling stainless hot rolled bar

Flat-rolled stainless producers shot blast hot-rolled stainless plate and sheet coils before pickling to loosen the embedded-type scale which is hard to pickle off. What do bar producers do to break up the hot mill scale before anneal and pickle? Michael McGuire...

    carbon supersaturation

Has anyone actually used any of the carbon or nitrogen colossal supersaturation processes for austenitic stainless steel? I could use a case study. I'm particularly interested in the Case Western/Swagelok process. Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    cast 2xx

Does anyone have any experience with stainless castings approximating the compositions of 201 or 202? How about cast equivalents to 2101 and 2003? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    heat input for stainless

Do any of the welding gurus know of a source for an internally consistent set of recommendations for heat input limits for welding the various types of stainless? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    request for cases

As many of you know, one purpose of this site is to obtain information for a book dealing with stainless steel. I would like to request some help from all of you. I could use photomicrgraphs, case studies, or any special content you may think relevant to a new handbook for stainless steel. Send...

    lean duplex

Has anyone in this forum used or specofied a lean duplex, such as 2101, 2003, or 2304? If so, what has been your experience? If you have considered using one of these, but decided against it, what were your reasons? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    under new management?

This forum has been a lot of fun for me, but I need someone to take it over since I'm going to be out of the country for nearly all the next eight months. Would that interest anyone? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    graphing software

What do you engineers recommend as far as free software for making graphs and charts? Origin software costs too much for a struggling writer. Here's a site that lists many. Does anyone have any recommendations?http://debianlinux.net/science.html#publication_portals Michael McGuire...

    new duplex grades

There are several lean duplex grades which have some attractive features. 2003, for instance, has the pitting resistance of 317L, high strength, and resistance to SCC. Their releatively low alloy content makes them less expensive than their equivalent austenitic alloys, in this case 317L. My...

    thermal analysis needed

Does anyone know of a lab or company who can do thermal analysis of a prototype cooking utensil to measure its thermal dispersive characteristics, i.e. how well does the fry pan spread out the heat? Michael McGuire http://stainlesssteelforengineers.blogspot.com/

    thermal measurements

A colleague of mine is trying to measure the heat dispersive effectiveness of a new multilayer cooking utensil. It has layers of stainless, aluminum and copper. They want to do infrared analysis to see how evenly heated the cooking surface is. Does anyone know a laboratory, preferably in the...

    201

About ten years ago I helped Manitowoc, a major US manufacturer of ice-making equipment, to convert their exterior panels to 201 with a finish rolled onto a bright-annealed surafce by a temper mill to resemble #4 polish. (Trade name,Koolline) Previously they had used 304 with a #4 polish...

    cost saving grades

If you exclude the 409 used for automobile exhaust systems, 304 is the most widely used type of stainless. It is a very appropriate grade for many applications, but for most, it is over-engineered. In these days of expensive nickel, it is generally preferrable economically to use a stabilized...

    who produces 440B?

The martensitic stainless steels used for premium knife blades are made from a grade which has 15%Cr,0.50%C, 1.0%Mo, and 0.1%V nominally. Does anyone have experience with steel producers who make this alloy? I believe it can be produced by continuous casting, but I'm not sure. Anyone have a clue?
