I've just made a career change from the public works/land development industry into pipeline engineering (oil/gas...but mostly gas).
Question: Are there "pipeline" companies in Austin, TX should I decide to move there?
Should I make the switch to pipeline engineering for an Oil/Gas company from Land Development? Have any civil engineers made the switch to pipeline engineering? Would you suggest it? Any advice? Was the pay competetive for you? I just received an offer letter but the pay isn't much different...
I have been contemplating the move to an oil/gas company lately. The reasons: 1. bored with my current work in land development and 2. I love the prospect of travelling.
Any advice on making this transfer? How would a PE in general civil engineering go about making such a move?
How do I calculate the distance in the x, y, z planes if I wanted to rotate, say, a 10-foot segment of pipe attached to a 22.5-deg bend by 45 degrees? That is, how do I illustrate the difference in station and elevations depending on how much I rotate a x-deg bend?
I'm a design engineer working in the linear infrastructure public works side of the fence (no plant work). I typically design water, storm, and sanitary lines with minor experience in paving, drainage, and roadwork. I should be taking my PE exam for the first time in October.
Which test...
Has anyone ever made the move from Houston, TX to Portland, OR? I have an opportunity to move to the great pacific northwest (i love the scenery), but the logistics of moving are troublesome. Anyway, I am a civil engineer in public works infrastructure with the opportunity to work for an up...
I am starting on a project where I'll be introduced to paving and drainage. The little that I have learned so far seems pretty standard and conducive for a step-by-step guide. For example, Step 1. Locate critical tie-in points such as streets, driveways, etc. 2. Create drainage area map. 3...

I have the opportunity to work for KBR (Halliburton) as a civil engineer in Iraq. Has anyone worked in Iraq? Any testimonials or advice? Would you do it?
...and work for an american engineering firm. I am an EIT in civil engineering who would like to have the opportunity to learn spanish and a foreign culture. Is it possible for me to join a gas/oil company that have bases in south america with only a civil engineering degree?
I am starting research on a report and powerpoint presentation. The topic is going to be about the proper way of training/teaching novice engineers. Basically, there's been a problem at my work place when it comes to training, or lack thereof, new engineers. Project managers are giving...
Due to restrictions, I am to design a road with a 500' radius curve and an 800' reverse curve. Our client does not want superelevation because of the possibility of commercial development adjacent to the road.
What is the maximum design speed that I can obtain assuming only a normal crown of...
It seems that BFV's are cheaper than GV's at this diameter, but makes 'pigging' the line much more difficult. Any opinions on what to select if you are worried about: Initial cost , lifetime cost , and maintenance? I understand that BFV's are cheaper initially, but GV's may catch up when you...
I am producing a set of construction drawings of 24" and 30" water transmission line. According to the water district we are working for, there have been cases in the past where the water lines haven't been properly cleared of particles both small and large. I've heard of the term "pigging"...
What is the best material for a 16" water transmission line that will buried in wet soils via open-cut (let's assume that well pointing or trenchless is not an option)? I was thinking of CertaLok's new 16" C905 PVC because of its restrained joint system. Any other thoughts?
I am currently working on a large diameter water transmission line project where PVC, ductile iron, steel, and bar-wrapped steel cylinder concrete pipe will be incuded in the bid sheet and specifications. The idea is to drive down prices due to competetion. My question is: What material do I...
What is a good textbook or other resource that describes the basics and terminology of water distribution? Is there something that describes everything from "freshwater canals" to "water plants" to "elevated storage tanks" all the way down to service lines feeding buildings? I'm looking more...
Project Description: 29,000 L.F. of 30” OR 24” water transmission main and 8,000 L.F. of 16” water main—all within road right-of-way. The waterline will be 4 to 8 feet behind the edge of asphalt of a 2-lane (one lane each direction) heavily trafficked open-ditch roadway. The depth will...
