Prelim/final check of existing V-ditch, new pipes

In doing some preliminary/final calculations to check the capacity of an existing concrete V-ditch I wanted to summarize, and ask about, the design steps I use. There are two residential sites, one 24000 sf and another 16000 sf. The larger site will be connected via a 6" or 8" pipe (85' long)...

Convertiing concentrated flow to sheet flow

Has anyone used anything other than dispersion walls or rip-rap to convert concentrated flow to sheet flow? I am trying to drain a sloping (5-10%) residential property to an existing, natural ravine at the back of the lot. We could also use a sump pump to get the water up the slope to the...

Converting concetrated flow to sheet flow

Does anyone use anything other than dispersion walls or rip-rap to convert concetrated flow to sheet flow? The owner of this project is also thinking about using a sump pump. It seems there are a lot of disadvantages with this option. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Dispersion Wall

Can anyone provide me with a reference for dispersion walls, which take concentrated flow and converts it to sheet flow. Thanks

    RBS for Moment Frames

Just curious if others are using reduced beam sections for the beam to column connections in moment frames. We use these frequently in residential projects.

    Professional Liability Insurance

Hello: In a couple of months I will be going on my own and therefore am currently shopping for professional liability insurance. Could anyone suggest a company to consider, and companies not to consider? And why? I would truly appreciate any comments. Thank you.

Shoring (pile) design using passive pressure

The way in which we determine the depth of a shoring member (e.g., drilled concrete caisson) is to apply all load above fixity (e.g., shear, moment, etc.) and then use the passive pressure resistance provided in a soils report to determine the depth below fixity (an aside: right now we are using...

    CONTINUOUS FLIGHT AUGER (CFA) SYSTEMS

We are currently looking into using a CFA system for a foundation design for a custom home. If anyone has some experience with such systems what are some good and bad points (e.g., effectiveness of installation, cost, time, etc.). Thank you very much for any responses.

    DESIGN OF LATERALLY LOADED PILES

Is anyone familiar with the AllPile program and its ability to design laterally loaded piles. I have downloaded the demo, which appears quite good, but before purchasing I was hoping to get some feedback. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    AREA SURCHARGE AND EFP

Using EFP, for an area surcharge load (i.e., a load of infinite length and width) behind a retaining wall, wouldn't the magnitude of the force be S x H (where S is the surcharge load in psf and H the wall height in ft)? Wouldn't the magnitude of the loading diagram be S? And thus the moment be...

why we cannot access the civil, structural, surveying group?

    Chord Steel

In tilt-up walls, what is a common method used for determining the area of chord steel. The seismic design manual shows a calculation as As = 1.4P/(0.9Fy). Thanks in advance.

    SURCHARGE equations

Does anyone know if the lateral earth pressure equation for an infinite strip load breaks down if the loading is right next to the retaining wall? The equations for this condition generally show the load some distance 'b' away from the wall. I have not read about any limitations of 'b', but I...

Sloped surcharge set back from retaining wall?

Are there any formulas, articles, or books, that anyone knows of for a situation in which a sloped surcharge is set back some distance from the back of a retaining wall. That is, the toe of slope does not occur right at the back of the wall. I am civil eng. trying to write spreedsheets for the...
