This happened in my neighborhood. Came upon it just after it occurred. Fire alarm was activated and could hear sprinklers pouring water.
Appears the building was unoccupied. I'd seen no recent construction there.

Looking for a little assistance here.
Photo below is from a pump station interior. It's 8" CMU and drawings spec #5 @ 16" each way. Brick veneer on the outside.
I've never seen these vertical slots before. Can anyone tell me what they are or their purpose?
Thanks -
This was within a mile of my house.
Caused by 'human reporting error' that misidentified an existing pipe that should/would have been replaced.

I have an existing, precast concrete parking garage that was built in the late 70's. Two parking levels above grade. Double Tees, spandrel beams, beams & columns w/ precast shear walls. It appears to be generally in good condition and there is no snow/salt/ice here. It is also unoccupied, as...
In this aged thread @transmissiontowers describes and generously provides a photo of a locking mechanism to mechanically join two sections of tapered pole at the slip splice.
I'm trying to find this or a similar mechanism to specify on a drawing, but my google-foo is lacking. Anyone have an...

Driving home over the weekend and saw these condos under construction. Thought the framing was interesting so I stopped for a look.
Any concern with the checks/splits in those cantilevered 4x8s? Or is this already considered in the lumber...

Existing multi-story (6-ish) CIP PT concrete garage with steel framed stair cores at the corners. Land owner wants to erect a free-standing single pole sign structure adjacent to the garage. The garage is really big (250' x 600').
At the sign location, the nearby garage building and stair...
Just looking for a little sanity check here.
I had designed a Risk Category II structure in the CA desert up the hill north of San Bernardino. Was 110 mph under ASCE 7-10. Re-did it for the new code as it will be permitted next year. Wind speed reduced to 96 mph and the elevation factor is...
Are side face blowout and splitting related or discrete failure mechanisms in concrete? I've seen a few places (some threads here & the Widianto pedestal reinforcing document) that reference the minimum edge distances in 318-14 17.7 (or 318-05/11 D.8) of 6*da to preclude side face blowout. It...
Storm Thursday evening detached a parapet from a building. Parapet looks really tall and apparently the bottom of the braces weren't well anchored (or developed).

Looking for some input on design/evaluation of the situation below. Existing structure that my company owns which was engineered and recently built by others. I'm evaluating some changes to the loading. Foundation for a telecom tower with large (2400 ft-kips factored) overturning moments and...

Looking at wind loads on appurtenances and the gust effect factor.
REV-H of the standard has the factor for structures laid out in section 2.6.7. Paragraph 3 of 2.6.9 then states that the gust effect factor for design...
I'm looking for guidance (code supported or otherwise) on the placement of conduit for drilled pier foundations or pedestals atop mat foundations.
Structures are telecom towers typically with large diameter anchor bolts embedded into the pier footing (sometimes concrete pedestal atop a mat...
In RISA 3D, is there a way to combine multiple members into a single physical member? I understand how to get from one physical member to multiple split at nodes, but I don't know how to get back.
