Can you fail a weld because of non uniform as per d1.1, I ask because I did not see anything on non-uniform in the acceptance criteria and I got some major ugly welding going on.
master ICC inspector, AWS CWI
1)would you as a cwi go over the head of another cwi on inspection if you are not the primary independent inspector.
2) non-uniformity is a weld discontinuities but can you fail a weld because of it in d1.1
reason, contractor doing just ugly weld, very ugly, make you wonder if the welder...
Doing a three story red iron bldg, they are hanging this week. Its loaded with moment welds, every connection. The weld is a B-u4a which is basically a groove butt weld unlimited thickness with a 45 degree and a 1/4 inch root, with backing. My question is, since the whole bldg is moment, how are...
This is an issue I been fight with steel erectors for years. If the weld plate is not flat the beam wont set bearing on the plate. Some will have 100% on the weld and not the plate. This is the same with K joist. I like to see 100% bearing on beams and as much as possible with k joist. My...
As a CWI, welder certificates are required on each project I do. I been getting a lot of counterfeit / fake certificates over the past couple years that have one thing in common. They are all coming from the same company. That also doesnt have a location address. Its probably a side job for...
I got a question on weld plates on a typical cmu bldg. How important is the bearing plane of the weld plate concerning the setting of red iron beams and k joist. Is this a critical variable. I been raising hell about the weld plate not being level, when the beam goes in, there a void under the...
as a concrete inspector, i have always used the roll meter, its in good shape, I gget a new one about every five years, I like the roll meter.
The pressure meter, is bulky for my small truck and people do like to take them, when they in the bed. leaky oring, stuck valves etc. nothing abnormal...
Can you qualify a welder on 5/16 steel plate in 1F, In d1.1? All I,m seeing is 3/8. I assume that was a minimum using table 4.11
ICC special inspector, Structural masonry, Reinforced concrete.
Been playing with my survey meter and notice some time I get a false positive. This will happen on a totally clean area , just enough to barely move the needle on 1x. I notice other meter will so it to but not in the same area. This is a question you can't really ask people because not many...
stupid question but not really sure of a placing drawing notation
there a notaion like for example 2x3x5 #5
I know that 5 # 5 bars and the 3 would be three time, does the 2 mean2 different places like maybe 2 different columns with the same bars and detail
Is there a book that help on placing...
My latest 318 is an 02 issue, in the ACI 04 manual. I know there is an 318 (08) model, is there anything in between those years? Where can I found out what is different between those years?
How does Super P work. I know what it does and have used it over thousand times in over the years, but how does it work, how does it get it results without hurting the concrete. Reason why i ask, many people have ask me this and I want to make sure my story correct.
Not an argument but to see what others think. I dont think nuclear density gauges are accurate, any of them. I think they are no better than 85%. Prove me wrong, but after 26 years in the business i have no fate in the gauges.
Been doing this 26 years so no dummy here. I got this pink silty whatever, it not a sand, not a clay. It classified as a SM. its almost talcom powder. It wont get over 92% modified. I have double check nuke, sand cone ,drive tube all within a pound. double check PD. one points under nuke, still...
To take the test it reference the ICC code book. The test itself, concrete, masonry or steel. Does that test reference the whole code book or just that chapter concerning the test.
Reason, I have copies of the chapters but not the whole book. Do i need the whole book to take the test?
stupid question but trying to settle an argument:
"how do you operate a nuclear density gauge on a limestone aggregate base material?"
note, any rock can be substite for limestone, not question the limestone but the rock aggregate. Dont leave out any steps, walk throught every movement. I'm...
