Max 8 crash on Air Disasters

Just watched the latest episode last night... S16:E4, discussing the failed Lion flight, as well as the near-failure flight of the same bird the evening before. Dan - Owner http://www.Hi-TecDesigns.com

History of the Quartz Crystal Oscillator

Recently came across this ~370-page PhD thesis covering the history of the quartz crystal oscillator. Given its presence in nearly all things electronic these days, I thought some here might like to take a gander...

More on the Paradise, CA Camp Electrical Fires

This is a continuation of an older thread here: https://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=459781 Just came across this Twitter feed with some interesting analysis tidbits on the towers and the resulting fire: https://twitter.com/TubeTimeUS/status/1306359385656946688 Dan - Owner...

    Sikorsky S-76B crash (Kobe Bryant)

Anyone heard any technical details on the cause yet? https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/sikorsky-reacts-to-helicopter-crash-that-killed-kobe-bryant-four-others/2214898/ Dan - Owner http://www.Hi-TecDesigns.com

Any IC layout engineers in here?

Looking for book suggestions on IC layout (mostly digital, but analog is still good info to have in the back pocket). Specifically looking for details about various cell types, common (old) and cutting edge processing techniques/method, etc. My current to-get list includes: The Art of Analog...

    Just not Southwest's week...

And I'll be flying SW in a few months... https://nypost.com/2018/05/02/southwest-airlines-flight-makes-emergency-landing-due-to-broken-window/ Dan - Owner http://www.Hi-TecDesigns.com

    Looking for drain-/source-swapped P-channel FET

Looking for a P-channel FET in a SOT-23 package that has the drain and source pins swapped from the industry standard. Does not need to handle much power or voltage (5V @ 1mA). I know such a creature exists, but finding one when you need it is (so far) impossible... Dan - Owner...

    Ultrasonic knife

This forum is about as good as any... Looking for an "inexpensive" ultrasonic knife... anything in the $200ish range? Best I've found so far is a model from Honda that's >$400 (Amazon, eBay), etc. I don't expect to receive a lot of benefit from a $3k+ model, and I'd hate to lose $400+ if/when...

    Fired for documenting accidents

Not an engineering disaster, per se, but I imagine the readers of this particular forum would have more specific insight... A discussion group I'm part of that deals in CNC machining recently had a post (with pics) of an accident. It seems a machinist decided to poke his head into the working...

    Package type ID

I've come across an IC package type I can't identify, so help is appreciated. It's similar to a TSSOP-8, but the overall dimensions are smaller (3.1x2.0mm package). The relevant dimensions (in millimeters) are roughly: Width: 2.2 (3.1 with pins, toe to toe) Length: 2.0 Height: 0.7 Pitch: 0.5...

    What does the 'H' mean?

I'm looking at the plate on a switch and I see multiple ratings on the front: 1/4 H.P. 120-240 V.A.C. 3A-240 V.A.C. 13A-120 V.A.C. (H) On the back, a stamp reads: 6A-120 V.A.C. I'm interested in why the multiple 120VAC ratings for the same item, but I'm mostly interested in what the 'H' stands...

    Brake proportioning

The wife's car (Nissan Cube) has had issues from practically day one... but this particular thread is about brakes. At some point in the past, the steering wheel took on a real shudder during braking... fine, warped rotors. But why did they warp? While doing some maintenance work (read...

    3D laser scanner head

Anyone have experience using 3D laser scanner heads, i.e., galvos with dynamic focusing capabilities (not just F-theta lenses)? Specifically, I have questions on the controlling software you use... Let me know, I'd love a few minutes to pick your brain. Dan - Owner http://www.Hi-TecDesigns.com

    NIR-blocking plastic

This seems like the best forum for this... Looking for a (preferably US) supplier of near-infrared blocking plastic, particularly in the 1-1.1um range. So far, everything I've found has been listed as a specialized item for blocking of fiber/YAG laser beams... which is fine, but I would prefer...

    Sticky mats

Not a molding resin question, per se, but I figured you guys would know, if anyone... I'm looking for an inexpensive source for a thin rubber mat that has a sticky feel to one or both sides (these are usually used to hold down thin/light objects during light machining operations, such as rotary...

    Need help finding proper alloy

I hope this is the best forum... doesn't seem to get too much activity. I'm looking for the most abrasion-resistant steel alloy I can get my hands on for a reasonable price. Suggestions? Some helpful info... the application will involve close proximity to hand-held high-speed steel (HSS)...

    Clearances... chicken or the egg.

Since I'm in the D.C./Baltimore area, I'm in an area with arguably the highest concentration of jobs that require a security clearance of one level or another. The problem is, if you have never held a clearance, getting into a job that is willing to pay for one is nigh impossible... there are...

    Acrylics, humidity, and warping

A number of fellow associates are having issues with warping of colored acrylics, and we'd like to narrow down the exact cause (and solution). It is believed humidity is the issue, but unfortunately the effect does not appear to be transient. The sheets are 4'x8' in size, and I believe are...

    Nutrition label for LED fixtures

Finally the government is taking steps to normalize the ratings on LED fixtures. See here: http://www.lightingfacts.com/ An example label: Dan - Owner http://www.Hi-TecDesigns.com

The "truth" about eco bulbs ;-)

Had to include the smirk in the title considering the number of posts we've had in the past about eco-friendly bulbs (i.e., LEDs and CFLs) from crackpots, tree huggers without facts, etc. I figured this would be easy enough to point to if any more show up. It's a short little article about...
