Years ago, there was an article in Advanced Materials and Processing (the ASM publication) about ultrasonic soldering of aluminum radiators. Is this the current practice for OEM automotive radiators?
My brother is fixing up a late 70's MG and one of the interesting features he ran into is that the wheel cylinders for the rear drum brakes are upside down, i.e. the bleed screws is on the bottom of the cylinder. I have worked in the automotive brake industry and have never heard of this before...
I'm finishing a failure analysis on some broken 302 stainless springs that were used in an animal watering system. The springs were exposed to well water and had a nice uniform coating of rust. There was a prominent sulfur peak--this did not surprise me, as sulfur in well water is not unknown...
Both of these adhesives can be used for bonding aluminum, from what I have found. Does polyurethane have any advantages in vibration dampening/sound deadening compared to epoxy? The application would be bonding (laminating) two panels of aluminum for an automotive dash panel.
I have need for a full service quench oil supplier. I am aware of Houghton--can anyone recommend a couple of others? I need someone that will make recommendations as to what grade of oil is best suited to the product configuration and chemistry being heat treated, as well as provide a periodic...
Anyone got a feel for amount of carbides that would be considered typical for Q&T SAE 6150 steel? Starting material is spheroidize annealed, austenitizing temp is 1600F, oil quench, and temper to hardness of Rc 46-51. Section size is appoximately 0.20"
Does anyone have a source for polyethylene or otherwise unbreakable versions of the centrifuge tubes for checking Magnaglo particle concentration (solvent based system, not water)?
A colleague has examined lube oil from a gearbox and finds it to be emulsified (milky in color) and the water does not seem to separate out after a sample sat for 24 hours. The question (which is somewhat academic, as the bearings can be replaced if necessary) is how corrosive would an...
My company makes large springs and the customer wants some galvanized, which they will source. They wanted a light rp on the parts and referenced a certain manufacture's product. However, they wanted us to cut the rp with xylene, which we refused to do, as we don't want the hazmat and OSHA...
Over the years, I have read the sections in my vehicle manuals governing max weight for a trailer to be towed. The governing parameter seems to be the combination of trailer weight and tow vehicle weight. I had always assumed that this related mainly to braking capacity of the tow vehicle. Is...
A retired engineer friend of mine had worked for an aerospace component/systems supplier and mentioned one program where the device was over the intended design weight. One solution contemplated was changing the wiring from copper to aluminum. This seemed like a bad idea to me and I was...
I have a rather unique set of requirements for a short term rust preventitive that will not bake into a varnish during a subsequent 450F stress relief. We make springs that get shot peened and then are given a 450F stress relief. It is not an inline process, so we have the potential for shot...
I am looking at a process tank for a metal pre-treatment containing "fluoride compounds" in the range of 5-10%, phosphoric acid in the range of 1-5% and hexafluorotitanic acid in the range of
1-5%. The bath will consist of 5% of this chemical in DI water. Bath runs at ambient temperature and...
I seem to recall that prior to ISO standards, the Japanese had their own standards for metric fastener sizes. Many of these became obsolete when metric ISO fastener standards were adopted. I am right on this? The reason I ask is that I have run across some fasteners on a Japanese 2 stroke engine...
My company has in house ferrous heat treat facilities and we recently acquired another company with similar facilities. I have been asked to evaluate their quench oil vs ours and have found that the acquired company is using mineral oil products not specifically intended for use as quenchants...
