ASME Y14.5 'tends' to differentiate between bolts and nuts in the Fixed and Floating fastener formula section.
Is there a consensus amongst engineers/designers/cad operators as to the technical correctness of the definition of bolts verses screws?
ONCE UPON A A TIME,
I believe there existed a standard/spec which recommended the appliication of decimal/inch dimensioning for designs where allowed, verses fractional/inch dimensioning as much as possible.
That is to say for example, use 6.20 X 4.80 for the sheet size instead of 6.25 X...
Using Y14.5 and decimal inch on drawing, how should an angle of say 25.000 (basic) degrees be expressed. How many decimal places are required?
The Standard seems to be a little vague or again I am overlooking.
Does anyone see a problem with repeating datum feature identifiers when used on a second or third sheet, or for that matter, in a separate detail or section on the same sheet? And, if so is it necessary to label as ref in some manner?
I did a search on the Y14.5 Std and found no results.
TIA
This may be a bit difficult to describe in words alone, but here goes.
We have a rectangular plate, on which we have designated the surface as datum feature A, the bottom edge as datum feature B. So far no problem. The width has been designated as datum feature C which establishes the mid...
If a basic dimension is repeated in separate views of a drawing, does this pose a problem for interpretation in any way or violate the standard? The dimension of course applying to the same feature in both views.
The drawing of course being prepared 'In compliance with ASME Y14.5M-1994.'
I...
If the task was to dimension a rectangular sheet of aluminum with pilot holes to be match drilled at subsequent assembly, and Geo Tol were applied, which would be the preferred locational tolerance for the pilot holes and why?
Diametric or square (rectangular)?
Any thoughts on this?
Has any consideration been given (by forum readers)to
applyihg a rectangular or square tolerance zone to the PLTZ when using composiite tolerancing on a part which is essentially rectangular or straight edges as opposed to a diametral configuration?
If it were used, and the size were equal to...
I am curently checking drawings prepared in accordance with ASME Y14.5-1994. The first note on the format states 'DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCING IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASME Y14.5M-1994.' and as a part of that note, 'UNLESS SEPARATE TOLERANCES ARE SHOWN, PERFECT ORIENTATION AT MMC FOR RELATED FEATURES...
Are there users of the ASME Y14.5M who have had occasion to apply Equal Spaced to a holes located on a basic dimensioned diameter? I had thought that was an antiquated and retired term for dimensioning.
And if you have, did you put the block around it to indicate it as a 'basic locator'?
Recently I encountered a drawing that I thought had an unusual callout on it. The feature control frame was for a threaded hole. The upper portion indicated a diametric positional tol of .015 dia with a projection of .750 relative to A, B, C (normal). The block directly below, attached...
I have a question relating to the allowable drift of a .065 hole approx 3 in deep in Cres. What is the expected or allowable drift for such a hole?
Stated differently: I have a drawing which specifies a .065 hole at a depth of approx 3 inches and imposed a positional tolerance of .005 dia...
Hypothetically:
I have a cylindrical part with tapped holes in different patterns on each end of the part. Assuming the part describes the OD as datum feature A and both end hole patterns are related only to A. Do simultaneous requirements apply to the patterns at the ends?
To add to this...
Does anyone out there ever use, or even aware of the need for datum feature PHYSICAL identification on symmetrical parts? Does anyone know of a text that provides an example?
Imagine a part with 2 axes which are not in line, but offset. These are used in a callout as primary and secondary datum features. How does the CMM accomodate this condition?
The axes are depicted on the drawing as parallel. Manufacturing would not guarantee paralllelism, (in my opinion)...
Ringman,
How is orientation of a pattern accomplished when you have plane say A, a cylinder say B, and a slot, say C running the length or a portion of the length. C being the tertiary and used for orientation, FCF [A B C] I have aome problems, anyone else?
I used to think that orientation was...
Is it possible that someone in this forum might be able to give me a link (?) to an example of 'tan plane', as defined in ASME Y14.5-1994, being used on a part?. I am searching for a 'real world part' rather than a partial example in text or training manuals. I am trying to improve my...
Why is it that rarely, if ever, a rectangular tolerance zone is used when compound positional tolerancing is required on a drawing? Assuming for the moment that the outline is of a rectangular configuration. I know of no examples in the Y14.5 illustrating this.
