    Export facet body as-is?

Anyone know how to export a facet body as-it from NX for use elsewhere? I've been doing some work with facet bodies in NX. Sometimes I need to transfer to other programs like SOlidWorks or Geomagic. The problem I am facing is there seems to be no way to save a facet body to another format in...

Coordinate Systems not scaling to view

I have an assembly that is showing odd behavior with coordinate system scaling. Coordinate systems (both in-part and component) appear much larger in this assembly than in other places. The CSYSs change size with scale, but are still much larger than they should be. Screen shots of behavior...

    The Legend of Layer 21

Wherever I go, Layer 21 is the de facto standard layer for sketches, and layer 61 is where the absolute CSYS resides. This was the case when I started UG in 1995. It's still the case today. I've seen it in many places and many industries. How did this come to be? It may have started with...

    RIP forum.solidworks.com

Solidworks' primary forum at forum.solidworks.com will be gone as of April 2, 2021. After that, the site will ported to 3D (Dreadful) Experience World. Much weeping and gnashing of teeth have ensued. Sackcloth and ashes worn by all. One of the greatest strengths of SolidWorks has been the...

    Save as "Imprecise"

I save an assembly as "precise". Now I regret it. I can't seem to find a way to revert to imprecise. Is there a way? [bat]Honesty may be the best policy, but insanity is a better defense.[bat] http://www.EsoxRepublic.com-SolidWorks API VB programming help

    Making CircuitWorks produce useful output?

Trying to learn CircuitWorks. Frustrating. Just a lot of BS videos showing it do a half-baked job with canned demos. Nothing that really helps solve any of the myriad problems that emerge when trying to use for real work. Why does CW put all my top-surface outline sketches on the bottom...

Draft Analysis not working for certain parts

Once in a while, a part file decides that it simply won't allow Draft Analysis to work anymore. This seems to happen to certain part files and then can't be undone. It doesn't seem to be fully related to geometry. I can take a "broken" part, insert it into a new part and DA works just fine. Is...

    printing fine encoders (>300 lpi)

I have to find a way to print some encoder wheels with very fine resolution. Encoder (Avago AEDR-871x) is picky, and reads in neighborhood of 300 LPI --> one line is 1/600 inch (1/24 of a mm for those dwelling in civilised places). I have a couple vector files to test print. Going to get some...

    Tiny dovetail

We're machining a dovetail onto a set of mass-produced small aluminum (6061-T651) parts. It is a 60° dovetail, 5.5mm [.216in] wide x 1.25mm [.049in] deep. The original plan to CNC mill the dovetail seems a no-go. The tolerance is ±0.05mm, which is way too much to maintain a decent sliding fit...

Gears all in a line--doesn't seem quite right

I'm designing a gear train with multiple reduction stages (10:35 to 10:35 to 10:35 to 10:55). I have some flexibility in where the gears are placed. My gut tells me it's best not to string the gears such that all the axles are all in a straight line. Any merit to that hunch? [bat]Honesty may...

24/414 bottle neck with attachment--need specs

Working on an application similar to what is pictured here: http://www.sks-bottle.com/340c/fin18z.html Need a bottle with a snap-on insert and covered with a cap. It appears the 24/414 is what I want. However, I can't find any details about dimensions. Does anyone know where I can find specs...

    Wayne Tiffany has passed away

https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/57875?tstart=0 For anyone who does not know. I can't recall seeing him on Eng-Tips. However, he was a great presence on the SolidWorks.com fora.

Crazy experiment to go back in time?

So much weeping and woe has been expressed over the lack of ability to convert a SolidWorks file to an earlier version. I have an idea, but do not have the resources to try it or know if it is feasible. Many CAD programs now have the ability to open and translate files from other applications...

Couldn't save old versions to new

Had a weird issue. My session (SW2010 SP4.0) would not allow me to save or convert older files to new. Could not be done by save-as (including "as copy") or by Task Scheduler. Problem was finally solved by copying settings from another user. However, we are unable to identify what setting...

Idler that engages/disengages w/ direction change

Looking for a mechanism to engage/disengage a gear train when drive gear direction changes. Scale is too small for a sprag clutch. We already have one candidate idea to throw an idler in/out axially with a helical gear. We would also like to find a way to kick an idler gear in/out in-plane...

    SW Pack-and-Go "Include Drawings" fail--SOLVED

For the longest time, I was having trouble getting Pack-and-Go to find drawings. When I hit the "Include Drawings" checkbox, the process would start, then hang. Today I discovered that the culprit is "Flat View". Include Drawings works fine in Nested View, but hangs in Flat View.

    Pirate trap

Idea for vessel to combat piracy: Vessel that looks like a high-end yacht above the waterline. Below the waterline is a small sub that can be accessed through floor of "yacht". Pirates approach vessel, decoy crew escapes via sub. Naval assets take over without worry about hostages (or...

    Variable fillet--UNassign value to vertex???

Working with variable radius fillets. Finding that once a vertex has been assigned a radius, it can't be returned to "unassigned". This is a problem, as I want to have the transition occur across two segments, and I want to remove the value assigned to the vertex that is in between. Is there...

    HSLA madness & stiffness controversey

We are building a support frame from tubular steel. Boss is not satisfied with the amount of deflection (no plastic deformation) and wants to address deflection by switching to HSLA. Everything in my experience tells me there is no difference in stiffness between HSLA and mild steel when...

    DC current detection--relay?

I am looking for a means to detect current flowing to a DC motor. Ideally, I would like to find a relay with nigh-zero resistance that switches when it detects or passes current from 0.5 to 5.0 amps with no voltage drop. I am about to give up and build my own (coils and reed switch). Still...
