On how and where to insert command snippets inside Workbench mechanical

I am looking for a good reference on where and how the command snippets need to be inserted inside a Workbench mechanical tree. I do this all by trial-and-error. This one rejects the hacker-style method of learning stuff. I am not seeing progress at all. Help is needed. Any input will be highly...

    Workbench 19: Submodelling (?) error

Friends I first prestressed the model using INISTATE. Then duplicated it. In the duplicate, I loaded the second model with displacement loading only. I linked the second model to the first so that I can retrieve the results from prestress loading. The linking was successful because the second...

Ansys workbench structural:Two load steps different large displacement settings?

Friends I apologize for the long post. I need to run 2 analyses in the same Structural analysis in workbench 19. 2. First I prestress the solid model without invoking large deflection using INISTATE Apdl snippet on a link180 element attached to the solid in the model. I can do this...

Steel Deck In Large Floors Below Ground ? Your Experience

Friends I wonder if anyone of you has designed/used composite steel-concrete decks for large floors below ground. We usually use concrete moment frames/walls and solid floor slabs on the concern that thinner concrete in steel decks will not provide good rigidity and diaphragm action, and that...

3D GRID STRUCTURE (FRAMES)- Control Visibility In Autocad?

My friends I have a 3D grid structure modelled in Autocad. That is, there are X planes, Y planes and Z planes (elevations). The only way I know I can view each single plane is by placing each in a separate layer, lock all then unlock the one I want to work with. Is there a better way you...

Looking for a great resource on concrete cracking

Friends I will appreciate if you suggest a solid book on the subject of cracking of reinforced concrete members, the practical side of it. respects ijr

Cantilever Retaining Wall-How much top movement to tolerate?

Friends I have a cantilever retaining wall with stem 23ft (7m) high. Over time it has rotated and the top displacement is h/70, ie (4" or 10cm). Sizing shows it is OK statically except in the case of poor drainage. But drainage is poor. It looks good though. There seems to be no soil mass...

Specifying Adhesives for Strengthening of RC beams

My friends How does one specify epoxy adhesives for use to strengthen RC beams with steel plates? Sikadur -31 is popular in such applications among other adhesives, even used in post-tensioned girders. But what is the design parameter? Bond strength? Tensile strength to match that of concrete...

Strengthening RC beam with externally bonded plates.

My friends I am looking for good design references/guides on the strengthening of RC beam (for flexure and shear) using externally bonded plates. Theory and practice if possible. While FRP is well-covered, this one seems not to be. Thanks for your time. respects, IJR

Ansys workbench modeller: Changing the background?

Friends I am new to Ansys but doing well so far. The modeller screen (light blue that fades down the screen) however annoys me. How to change the background colors? thanks in advance ijr

On how were span-depth ratios derived.

My friends I need a reference text on this subject: How were the popular span-to-depth ratios for steel and reinforced concrete beams derived. I prefer the derivations, not general discussion. Thanks in advance. and for making this forum a great place. ijr

A truss chord accidentally bent in plane and in place.

Friends The fabricator, by mistake has fabricated a truss diagonal a couple of inches short. The erector, erects the chords(pipe sections) first, then bolts the diagonals to the chord. To fit in the short diagonal, he forces his way. The result is a chord with a kink. And the kink is about 4...

    Load Factor For Mobile Crane.

My friends I have to check a concrete framed building and slab for the case of a heavy crane that will support it temporarily as a steel superstructure is erected. What load factors would be appropriate for use with ACI? 1.4 DL + 1.4 Crane Weight? 1.2 DL + 1.6 Crane Weight? 1.2 DL + 1.2 Crane...

Why ASTM A490 in direct tension must be pretensioned but not A325?

My friends I can find no explanation as to why ASTM A490 bolts in direct tension must be fully pretensioned. This is not required for A325. Without understanding the mechanics involved, I am in the dark. thanks in advance ijr

    Infinite and Finite Fatigue Checks

My friends, When should one consider Fatigue 1 and when Fatigue 2?. It is just not clear to me. Textbooks adopt different approaches and can be quite confusing. For the same ADDT(SL) of 6800 (200000x0.2x2x0.85 based on a 2 lane rural intersates simple span stel beam-slab), some texts will go...

Area and Young's Modulus of Steel Wire Ropes

Friends I need information on the cross-sectional area and Young's Modulus (Elastic Modulus) for Steel Wire Ropes. I am going to use the standard 6 x 19 steel-cored bridge cable but I have no catalogue showing the metallic area or Elastic Modulus to use. I need to model the cable so that I can...

Reading Data From Other Workbooks without opening

My friends, I have a workbook full of data in F:\Design\DataFiles and the filename is ProfData.xlsm. So the full path is C:\Design\DataFiles\ProfData.xlsm. The first sheet in that file is named HE. Sub ReadData() dim wb as workbook dim ws as worksheet...

Does material lose strength when flame-cut?

At shop we flame-cut plates with our CNC cutters. At sites, to correct mis-fits we flame-cut pipes and plates with oxy-acetylene torches and proceed to weld them. Inspectors reject whatever is flame-cut at sites, but for some reasons they dont question our factory procedures. Why is that? thanks

Retaining wall in front of a vertical rock surface-Lateral Pressure?

The rock is tall (50ft, 17m)and is cut almost vertically. From rockface to wall the clearance is less than 2ft(0.60m). Sure there will be a cohesionless fill there. Does this slim fill qualify to cause lateral pressure? If yes, where is the failure plane and how can Coulomb procedure work here...

Design of roof drainage gutters and downspouts?

My dear friends I have annual rainfall data. I need a good reference material for design of gutters and downspouts. Most tables and graphs are for small houses and not useful to my huge roof. thanks IJR
