I have a tube with an inner diameter dimension consisting of a +/-.005 tolerance.
Does that tolerance also control the straightness of the tube?
From my interpretation, if the ID was a datum, then the theoretical datum surface would be a cylinder that fits within the tube. That implies...
I'm looking for good references that can define the difference between the available heat treatments listed in the subject line.
I found a couple ASTM and SAE references, and while they are great telling me about the physical properties of the differences (yield, tensile, and hardness) for...
Case Study: We use an adhesive. The adhesive comes in 4oz bottles, 12oz bottles, spray cans, or even 55 gallon drums.
Engineering creates a vendor item drawing that defines the acceptance criteria of the adhesive and offers recommendations for commercial items that fit the specification...
Decals (method -11) and Pressure Sensitive Labels (method -14) are listed under the permanent marking methods.
We like to use temporary labels on parts. Do the two methods above also apply to temporary (removable) labels or is there a better method to depict on a drawing? Could -36A be...
For several days I noticed that forum.alibre.com was disabled. I finally contacted support today to ask what was going on. Apparently, they were updating the platform (or backend server, or something I'm not too familiar with) and the upgrade wasn't supposed to take very long, thus they didn't...

I've read ASME Y14.36 and scanned ASME B46.1, but can't find any specific reference to the question I have.
When the surface finish callout is placed onto the drawing, does it imply the roughest finish possible? All of the mathematics that go into calculating the average (Ra) value aside, I'm...
I'm looking to benchmark records retention policies and best practices from comparable industries in order to determine how to better implement my company's retention policy and tools.
Areas I'm looking for in order to compare notes as well as be directed to areas I can further research on my...
We used to identify the design maturity level based on part number. Now, we are eliminating that business process and will be maintaining the same part number throughout the entire development cycle. Therefore, we would like a method to identify the Design Maturity on the face of the drawing...
I'm looking for standards, industry or corporate, that define the use of Airplane Coordinate Systems inside of CAD, CAM, and FEA programs.
It has been a long while since I used ACS and I'm now in the position where they would benefit a significant number of product designs I'm working on...
I'm new to creating ERR and am looking for a guiding document/standard that defines typical requirements and format for Engineering Release Records. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have a unique situation that I'm having trouble balancing between proper revision control and configuration management. But, it is more of a drafting standard question so I'm posting here rather than the CM forum.
We developed a product using our part numbers. Now, the customer wants us to...
Does anyone know of a specification or standard that has a definitive explanation of the difference between a Class I and a Class II change?

If you guys haven't been keeping up to date, PLM World is currently happening in Dallas this week.
You can follow the action via Siemen's blogs or twitter.

I'm curious as to how people verify that the royalties they are collecting from private companies.
Take a hypothetical example.
A consulting engineer helps a start-up company with the design of a new whiz-bang product. As a start-up, they have little capital to spend for the design up front...
I'm running into a surface finish problem due to, what we think, are oxides after heat treating aluminum.
The Part
The part is an aluminum tube 6061-O per ASTM B221 or ASTM B241. It is a thin-walled cylindrical tube used as a pressure vessel.
The Process
After initial forming, the 6061 gets...
Update 12.1 is available for download. Reading the fine print, it states to uninstall 12.0 before installing 12.1. I think that's a little strange for a dot release, or in my book a patch. Just be warned that you may have to manually uninstall first.

Alibre officially released v12 on the 29th, but they did it around midnight so you couldn't update until yesterday.
So far, quite a few positive comments on the Alibre Forums about the improved speed/performance and handy features in this new version.

As of v14 M030 patch, even single-use license holders will be required to be on active maintenance to receive any software updates. In order to get maintenance, you will be forced to upgrade to a server license or node-locked license. In other words, say goodbye to reasonably priced Mathcad...
Please help me negotiate through this tech support bubble known as PTC (oh how I miss you Mathsoft).
Anyway, I have a single-use license for home use. I haven't used it for a while and when I rebuilt my computer I didn't bother installing MathCad back on it, until last night.
I make it...
