    LWN Nozzle with Re-Pad

Hello, Is it considered good/sound engineering practice to design a pressure vessel nozzle utilizing a long weld neck flange and a reinforcing pad? You don't see this combination very often and I am assume there must be a reason. Thanks

Roller Expanding Duplex Tubes in a 304ss Tubsheet

Hello, Has anyone had success roller expanding 2205 duplex tubes in a 304ss tubesheet? (tube yield is approx. 60k / tubesheet yield approx. 30k) Tubeside gas has some hydrogen content. Thanks!

    Tube to Tubesheet Joint Welding

When welding tube to tubesheet joints in the vertical 3G position, what is the proper weld progression? Can I start at one point and weld 360 degrees around the tube to completion (uphill then downhill.) Or should I start at the bottom and weld upward 180 degrees stop, then start at the bottom...

Dark Areas of Stainless Steel Welds

Hello, I am looking at a fillet on 304ss material that was welded with GMAW pulse. Some welds appear to have dark discoloration - see attached picture. Is this normal? Thanks,http://files.engineering.com/getfile.aspx?folder=be7fd2ca-1808-4ace-bea9-9a1bcaf863e0&file=55248.jpeg

    "Base Metal" Terminology

When reading UHA-51 and the terms "base metal, weld metal and HAZ" are used, is this referring to components that are only welded? In other words, non-welded pressure containing components do not apply? Thanks, Brian

    2205 Heat Exchanger Tubesheet

Hello, If I have a shell and tube heat exchanger that has a non-welded (TEMA Type BEU) 2205 Duplex tubesheet, is impact testing required if the tubesheets is 1 1/2" thk? Thanks!

Stainless Steel Welding without Back Purging

If I back weld a stainless steel joint butt joint with FCAW would I then need to grind, gouge and clean up the opposite side prior to welding? Or should back welding limit the oxidation and sugaring? Thanks!

    GMAW Spray Gas

What is the preferred shielding gas when using GMAW Spray? We typically weld carbon steel at < 1" thk. and x-ray weld quality is required. We currently utilize the two different gases below but with less success with option #2. 1.) 98% Ar / 2% O2 2.) 90% Ar / 10% Co2 Thanks!

    Support Skirt Joint Efficiency

Hello, For vertical pressure vessels that has a skirt with base plate support can I utilize a JE = 1 in my required lower skirt required thickness calculation? Assume the skirt is welded directly to the base plate with a fillet weld only. My intent is to use a JE = 0.6 (butt weld joint) for...

    Bolt Torque Target Stress

Hello, Many gasket manufactures advertise bolt stress value from 30,000 psi to 60,000 psi for bolt torqueing purposes. Is there any concern that if I torque a stud to 50-60 ksi stress you may actually yield the flange that is being bolted? In other words the high torque value of the studs would...

TEMA Type BFU Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

I understand that a F shell TEMA type heat exchanger is specific to thermal designs where there is a temperature cross. Is it possibly that the temperature difference between the shell side inlet and outlet temperature be to great for this type of design? For example: Lets say my fluid...
