The reason whey they are looking to bolt two angles together is for weight purposes. They have to had carry everything into the building and then do all of the work off of staging (no lifts allowed). A tube would be my first choice of section, but not sure if I can get one under the weights...
I am not sure if the plan on doing hangers or not. Not exactly sure of the detail they plan on using. I envisioned the section being rotated 180 degrees with the web in compression, but then again, that doesn't make sense as that is the section that you want to brace the most.
At this point...
rb1957,
back to back is in a Tee (I believe). I am not exactly sure what the fabricator is proposing.

Your paper is certainly good enough for me. I wasn't sure if you would use J or 2J for this. Funny how the AISC doesn't really address this (or maybe they do and I just couldn't find...
I have been contacted by a steel fabricator to assist them in the design of supports for some sprinkler pipes in an old gymnasium. By some chance, they have sent me the old structural drawings from 1949 which give us the beam sizes and spacings for our supports. The existing roof decking is...
Yes, that is somewhat what I am going to have to deal with on this one. The ole "it has a small canopy on the front" trick.
How would you treat Db in this scenario. The branch member is not a square but rather a 10x6 tube. I can take an average of the two sides (8 in) or use 90% of the depth...
I have a project where the client has had the architect client has had the bright idea to have a fancy canopy project out from the front of the building. To add to the complexity, this canopy is to have AESS (architecturally exposed structural steel). One area requires a rectangular HSS to...
FM Global document 1-54 requires the use of ASCE 7-22 on page 6. This document was updated in October of 2024. This issue was picked up during the code review by the FM Engineer.
Prior to the start of the project, in June of 2024 we had a meeting with a FM Engineer to go over the design...
I have a project that I am currently working on that is to fall under FM Global Requirements. We are in snow country and it appears as if FM is requiring the roof to be in compliance with ASCE7-22 which uses ultimate snow load vs allowable snow load (which I know and love). Regardless, I am...
FWIW, I went to another project the other day..... it was just an elevator shaft for a small wood framed building. Mason was going to do grout lifts from floor to floor. Again, he had no idea what I was talking about when I told him he was doing high lift grouting (as our floors are more than...
As the name suggests, I need to design a foundation for an aluminum extrusion machine. I have been given the loading requirements for the foundation from the manufacturer. In one location I have a pier with dimensions (LxWxH) 39"x107"x30". The load on top of this pier was given to me as 90...
I have had an issue throughout my short career with telling people no. I like to consider myself a somewhat logical person. I like to make sure I can prove a design works rather than just wing it.
Throughout my career I have had numerous GC's and clients come to me with questions and...
They ended up verifying the cells using GPR.... which wasn't a big deal and only took a few hours. They said they have to come back and verify the construction once the grout is fully cured.
So at this point, we are going to have them verify grouting at all cells with reinforcing. In addition, where the walls are part of the LFRS for the structure, we are going to have them verify all grouted cells.
In addition, at locations were the walls are part of the LFRS, I am going to have...
Special inspections were specified and outlined in a Special Inspections Document we issued to the owner prior to construction.
Now it appears as if everyone is onboard with regards to doing things correctly (at least they say they are). In brushing up my cleanout knowledge, I have come across...
Is it just a matter to prove that it is grouted? I was always understood the requirement for cleanouts as to clean out the mortar droppings from the bottom of the grouted cells to allow for proper bonding of the grout to the concrete wall/grouted lift. The mortar droppings will be in hardened...
I have a building that is currently under construction that I am quite miffed about. The building is utilizing some CMU stair shafts as shear walls. We are grouting the walls solid and have give the contractor the option to do low lift grouting or high lift grouting. The contractor selected...
If what you are referring to is the white structure with the name City Hall on top.... then yes, something like that.... but no where near as fancy. Completely masonry enclosed with no windows, and the exiting structure is wood framed.
I know it will like to act as a cantilever tube in the end, but getting the walls to work individually would be a more of a "worst case scenario" as the cantilever tube should be much better overall.
