    Yes they can. If there has been a few days since the concrete has been cast, the location of the shrinkage cracks has likely been determined. Micro cracking has already occurred. You may have cracking occur between the new installed joints. You often find cracks form near sawcut joints...

    Not likely, if it's a code requirement. This is a life safety issue. The firewall has to stand independent of either part of the two buildings.

    Silts are very bad for frost heave... you have to try to eliminate the frost... extruded polystyrene? High strength if necessary.

    Thanks... if originally cedar, there are natural extractives that give it moisture, rot and insect resistance. Some cedars are better than others. Do you know if there are any tests undertaken to see if there's an improvement in the material?

    I was aware of that... Mass timber can develop protection. I understand the char layer also makes the next exposure to fire easier even though it offers protection. The treatment is generally used for dimensioned lumber and cladding not mass timber.
