    Plastic deformation of a guard

Greg This is what I was looking for. Can you post titles for books or reference material so I can read up on this? Thanks. Ward Holloway, Jr, P.E.

    Plastic deformation of a guard

Here is some history on this project. The design is similar in function to a guard rail on a road. My original design was large enough to keep the strain in the elastic limit of the steel. This design is too expensive for management. So I figured we can permanently deform the guard during...

    Plastic deformation of a guard

I am designing a guard for a material handling system. Low velocity, high mass. During impact I want the guard to deform to absorb the energy like a crumple zone in a car. Can someone point me to the proper analysis or method of calculating the size of the guard required. The construction will...

Solidworks running in wine for ubuntu

I have tried TurboCAD v12 and had no luck. It seems to lock up on bootup of the program. I tried an older version and it worked great. The trick is to run older software that doesn't have much fancy GUI applications. Sometimes you run into problems with the install program. Bottum line, the...

Effects of high temp. on welded structure.

Stainless is not an option, each pallet is about 2500kg and there are 80 of them. The costs adds up quick. Is there a cast material that I can use? Do you have any link or hard data to back up that upper temp. limit? I will need hard data to convince my management to change materials. Ward...

Effects of high temp. on welded structure.

I have a pallet system that will carry a steel coil into a heated tunnel for conditioning. The temperature will be 750 Celsius. The exposure time can be up to 60 minutes. Is there a source of well documented effects of this temp. on a welded structure? Also what will happen to any bearings or...

    Four post press design

I am designing a lifting system similar to a four post hydraulic press. Is there a design "rule of thumb" for the bushing that ride on the post. I am worried about any side loading causing a moment that may bind the platten. Ward Holloway, Jr, PE

    Single phase amp reading.

Update... I called the Optidrive vendor and as soon as I told him what I was doing he almost refused to sell it to me. I also researched replacing the motor-gearbox and found out it's a custom designed unit for this conveyor. It appears my only option is to replace the motor-gearbox and design a...

    Single phase amp reading.

It is a shaded pole motor about ,7amps. It is on a conveyor. I decided to try the Optidrive or something simular. Thanks for the help Ward Holloway, Jr, PE

    Single phase amp reading.

Update: Vendor claims the motor is a shaded pole single phase. The motor is rated at .7 amps. This is a conveyor... a very small one. I will attempt the variac solution as many post indicate this will work with a shaded pole motor. Thanks for the everyones help. Ward Holloway, Jr, PE

    Single phase amp reading.

Is there any possible way to control the speed of a single phase, 115VAC c-frame motor? It runs a small conveyor. Ward Holloway, Jr, PE

    Single phase amp reading.

This motor is 115VAC c-frame motor. I was told a variac could be used to control speed. Is this correct!! Ward Holloway, Jr, PE

    Single phase amp reading.

I have a small single phase motor with no name plate. I want to use a variac transformer to control speed, so I want to read amps while it is running but I don't want to cut open the cord. Question.. can I get an accurate reading from around the entire cord? This includes live, neutral and...

    cast iron impact

The housings are grey cast, I am not sure about the steel housings. I have also seen machine designs where cast is prefered over steel due to vibration. The impact strength of cast may be just rumor. It's not important for any design I was working on. I was just curious. Ward Holloway, Jr, PE
