    current price of fabricated steel

Anyone know the current ballpark figure for a ton of fabricated/detailed steel. Location is in Virginia but not looking for anything that specific unless it makes a huge difference. Just putting together some preliminary cost estimates.

Steel Stringer to Wood Chord Connection

I did consider lag bolts but from a constructability issue I wasn't sure. Can you get a drill in under the top flange of the stringer in order to set a lag bolt? Say you had a 6" lag bolt, that would only leave 6" to fit a drill in before you are up against the top flange. I suppose I could...

    Design of circular wall

It almost sounds similar to a concrete ring wall design problem except with the forces coming in from the exterior instead of the interior. We design "belts and suspenders" with our underground structures meaning that we design the horizontal bars for hoop stress and vertical bars as a...

Steel Stringer to Wood Chord Connection

I have a steel I stringer bearing on the top chord of a timber bent (Pedestrian bridge, light loads, etc). I am having trouble laying out the appropriate connection. My thoughts so far: 1. Through bolt down from the bottom flange through the timber chord. Problem is that the timber chord is...

    Computing Section Properties from AutoCAD

In similar situations, I have used RISA or RAM Advanse to create the sections and then view the section information. Excel also works wonders if you set it up to just input a OD and ID and let them run the formulas to calculate it for multiple shapes.

Thoughts on 16 hr SE Building Exam

Obviously without violating the Code of Silence you adhered to when taking the exam, I was wondering if anyone was willing to offer some feedback about what they thought about the new 16 Hour SE exam (preferably the building emphasis). I didn't want to be a guinnea pig on the first go around so...

    Scarifying Concrete for drainage

Man, I love this site...thanks for all of the help. I have considered a composite or FRP decking, perhaps even a two-layer deck where the lower layer is the FRP and the upper layer is a heavy timber (timber was a specification from the owner). Any vehicles on the bridge after the initial...

    Scarifying Concrete for drainage

AC, the bridge isn't so much a traffic bridge as it is a pedestrian bridge that will occasionally see a traffic/construction load. The reason that a concrete deck is going down as "Phase I" is that the bridge will serve as a means of access for construction activities occuring beyond it and...

    Scarifying Concrete for drainage

Considering options for placing a timber deck on top of a concrete slab on a single lane, one span bridge. I am concerned that water will collect between the timber and concrete and rot the wood decking too quickly. I am considering scarifying the top of the deck as a way to drain the water...

Help a Structural Guy - Anchor Forces

The sketch was merely an illustrate because my engineer brain cannot describe things with words as well as I can draw. However, the method I am looking for reassurance on should work for all cases, square/rectangular loops. Then the issue becomes sizing the loop to provide the most efficient...

Help a Structural Guy - Anchor Forces

Very nice resources...thank you. I need to investigate more into the equations but from the first look through, it appears to confirm my initial assumptions.

Help a Structural Guy - Anchor Forces

Attached is a sketch depicting a simple straight run of pipe between two anchor blocks with an expansion loop. The sketch represents an above group fuel pipeline for which I would like to know the reaction forces at the anchors due to a thermal load variation of 100 F. I have been given anchor...

Demonstrating the importance of Seismic Site Class

Does anyone have knowledge of a reference that explains in laymans terms the implications of selecting the proper seismic site class? Background: I am trying to educate other disciplines in my company about the implications of not including a seismic site study in a geotechnical investigation...

    Masonry Text for PE Exam

I found the 'cheat sheet' published by CodeMasters to be quite good. Most questions on the Structural I for masonry can be answered just by understanding basic stress computation versus allowable stress for simple cases. For the Civil-Structural test, this cheat sheet might be enough by itself...

    16 Hour NCEES Structural Exam

SteelPE, what jurisdiction are you practicing in? Just out of curiousity, I actually emailed our state board here in Virginia to ask what was the benefit of taking the 16 hour SE exam versus just taking the general civil PE with a Structural Depth component. Shockingly, in Virginia there is no...
