Introducing grandkids to ME & mfg

just saw Snap together electrical circuits which I think would be fun for kids who want to light up bulbs and make doorbells.

Introducing grandkids to ME & mfg

Transformer toys. Transformers are fun because they turn into a toy car+robot and are mechanical because you learn about joints and they way mechanisms. much easier to explain to a kid. I love the books called things like "How stuff works" or something. It's full of science facts...

    VMC/Machine models

I know parts companies often give out layout models, perhaps you can contact some tool companies to get layout dimensions. You'll need to know servicing dimensions so that the maintenace of machines is not neglected in the layout phase.

    Vibration Proof Mechanical Design Questions

I've found that the best way to design things with vibration in mind are know where your vibrational grounds are and where your large weights are. I've put in time on designing motor mounts, and typically they are large masses at the top of an adjustable table. The shorter the "moment arm" of...

    How safe is SW ?

Corrections, i.e. bootlegging the software under a different brand name. It has no data security implications because SW is NOT in charge of data security.

    How safe is SW ?

Solidworks source code would ONLY be useful in cloning the functionality of SW. i.e. bootlegging th sofeware unde a different brand name. It has no data security implications because SW is in in charge of data security. Your model files are secured by your network administrator and your...

    rust bullet or POR 15?

POR is almost always the preferred treatment for minor rusting. Do some searching and you will find that POR works consistantly and anodes are not reliable on autos.

    3d model of military humvee

If you can't get the models from GM in a timely manner there is another way to get those surfaces. I've worked with 3D scanning companies in the past and they can recreate the surfaces, possibly on location or possibly from a local Humvee. I've only heard of external surfaces being modeled...

    3d model of military humvee

Yeah, don't worry about someone using one of these models to simulate blowing up a humvee. First, it's not hard to get a real humvee to test. Second, these models are often made by hand from freely available pictures of vehicles, and are not controlled in any fashion, just like you could...

    Smirking in Meetings

Probably behavioral rather than a sly put down of the meeting. If it's a serious thing to you, Why not ask? It's ok to be frank with people about their behavior, I know I do things that other people have asked to be clarified. If it's not a big enough deal to ask, then let it go. Maybe he...

Working from home as a Designer

I've heard that companies don't like it because you lose the casual conversations that can solve problems in the office. That said I'd love to be able to design my stuff from home, but I can see how it would interfere.

    Swagelok fittings vs. VCR fittings

Yeah. Swagelok's VCR is the fitting with removable metal sealing element. It's for mechanical seals in gas lines. Swagelok, as I used it, was a name for their particular type of compression fittings versus standard pipe compression fittings.

    Plug Thread Binding

No because it is used to adjust the bearing end-float/loading and we don't want to have to machine the end cap to very tight tolerances to achieve that with a bolted design. There is a locking screw behind it.

    Plug Thread Binding

Thanks. I'll bring that up to my boss. I hadn't even considered that it might be casting/machining errors.

    Plug Thread Binding

We have a large diameter (11") bearing cap that is binding in assembly. It is threaded with 2" of Acme-3g with a pitch of .25 (11-4 ACME-3G) and I think we should go to a larger pitch. It is loaded, and holds the thrust bearing in place. Is this thread too fine for the diameter? The...
