    condensate pump noise

What elevation difference do you have between the pump and tank level? You mention NPSHA of 9 Meters, which would indicate 9 Meters(18 feet) of elevation. Also, what pressure range do you have for the split range control on N2 and vent? A large pressure swing could cause vapor bubbles to form...

    Building with Blowout Panels?

I was recently involved on a solvent extraction plant expansion, with a steel frame and sandwich panel siding. Blowout panels were installed, although I am not positive that the 5x Blowout Pressure was factored into the steel design. I seem to recall the material price tripling and the install...

Recent graduate with poor GPA, what do I do about my resume?

Senseless, Your odds are either ridiculous, or the other 9 people I graduated with have no street smarts. From your earlier post, I would not hire anyone who admitted that he had poor grades because of spending to much time drinking beer. College was about learning to balance your life, work...

    Engineer versus Designer

I am not a mechanical engineer and can not relate to FEA, although in my field, doing calculations is only a small part of "real" engineering. I agree with IRstuff, being able to do calculations is worthless if you don't understand the theory enough to rough out a good design to start with.

PM - From Dilbert to Pointy-Haired Boss??

IRstuff, You are correct, the relationships can be argued forever. My reading of the OP, brought me to think of direct project management, example-building a product, constructing a building, not necessarily broad program management, example-running a company. In my opinion, the need for...

PM - From Dilbert to Pointy-Haired Boss??

I suppose it all depends on which level and what you consider project management. On a small scale, the project manager better have a basic knowledge of engineering. On the other hand, on a large scale, techinical knowledge might not be that important. In my mind, FDR isn't necessarily D-Day...

    Systems Design Engineering

I agree with Asher, without trying to downplay systems engineering, it is unclear to most people what exactly systems enginering entails, not that it is any less of a discipline than any other. What classes in particular did you take? I know that as a Chemical engineer, I had to take a couple...

Ever feel like you're in over your head?

HgTX, I am not condoning making decisions when you do not know what you are talking about, that is stupid and dangerous. But, you can display confidence without making stupid, forced decisions, if you do not really know what you are doing. On the other hand, if you look like you have no...

Ever feel like you're in over your head?

To me, an engineer needs to display confidence that he knows what he is talking about, even if he displays confidence and then studies up later, as ziggi suggested. If I do not know 100% of what I am working on, I spend the time to learn it. That is one of the great things about engineering...

Do you think engineering is a "hands-on" career?

If you are looking for Industrial Automation and Controls, then you could look for almost any chemical processing company that maintains reasonably small facilities. In these situations, you will be forced to work hands on with control valves, PLCs, etc. as there is typically no one else to do...

Graduating soon but with poor GPA...

The only problem with making judgement calls as part of your job, is that you have to have a reason behind those judgements. Typically a young engineer will double check things with a quick calculation as they do not have the experience to draw on when making judgement calls. In this case, the...

Graduating soon but with poor GPA...

I am with you on this one ziggi, the non-engineering courses were great because you had to do little to no work and they boosted your GPA.

    moonlighting and ethics

Sorry Buzzp for kind of going off the deep end like that. My response definitely was a little to idealistic, but I am dealing with one of my coworkers right now who is starting up a business on the side. He spends all his time doing his side job, and nothing I need done can get done. But...

    moonlighting and ethics

Buzzp, Most employers don't care to much if you are tired at work every once in awhile. We have all done that before, including me. But it is the attitude that it seems that you have and it frustrates me. Do just enough to get a pay check and not get fired? I may have misread your posts and...
